Bocchi the Rock! Is Fall 2022's Silent Surprise Hit

Bocchi the Rock! is an anime series by CloverWorks that’s based on the four-panel manga of the same name by Aki Hamaji.

The series' title is a play on the Japanese phrase "hitori-bocchi" which means alone or lonely, as the story follows Hitori Gotou, a shy high school girl.

Despite being extremely introverted, Hitori dreams of being in a band, but she is too shy to join one.

Luckily, she meets Nijika Ijichi, a girl who plays drums and is looking for a new guitarist for her band.

Soon, Hitori joins the Kessoku Band with Nijika, Ryou Yamada, and Ikuyo Kita. This experience slowly allows her to come out of her shell.

In case you need a refresher, Episode 7 of Bocchi the Rock! showed Hitori in a panic after the mention of a sports festival.

After all, a school sports festival is the nightmare of extreme introverts.

Instead of just showing her panicking expression, the animators went a step above and made an animated sequence using a zoetrope – an early form of animation using a spinning cylinder that produces an illusion of motion.

Here’s a look at some behind-the-scenes images of how they brought the scene to life:

Along with garnering praise from Japanese fans on Twitter, this BTS of Bocchi the Rock! was also noticed by fans on Reddit, with many fans praising how CloverWorks went the extra mile for just one scene.
