DC Studios is developing a Blue Beetle animated series that will continue the fan-favorite hero's adventure in the DCU.
While the 2023 solo film failed to garner box office success, it received positive responses from fans and critics and they expressed hope that the hero's adventure will continue in a potential sequel.
Fortunately, DC Studios co-chairman James Gunn has confirmed that Xolo Maridueña's Blue Beetle is one of the few DCEU actors who is expected to continue their tenure in the new DCU franchise.
DC Studios Developing Blue Beetle Animated Series
A recent report has revealed that DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation are working on a Blue Beetle animated series that is part of the DCU.
The series will build from the 2023 film and create a new story with the characters. If it ends up being a success, it could potentially lead to a new Blue Beetle movie with Maridueña reprising the role in live-action.
There is no official word yet whether the film's main cast will return to the series, but the report indicated that they've been approached by DC Studios and received positive responses regarding returns.
Miguel Puga will serve as the showrunner and the director of the series while Cristian Martinez is writing. The film's director Angel Manuel Soto and writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer will also serve as executive producers.
While the film's follow-up may not be in the live-action space (at least for now), this is still encouraging news for fans of the film since it shows that DC Studios is still willing to continue Jaime Reyes' story despite the lackluster box office performance.
Let's hope that the film's entire main cast will agree to reprise their roles in the series including Maridueña as their performances were one of the reasons why the movie became beloved by many DC fans and make the series feel like a sequel.
