Batman: Caped Crusader will have a massive change in its portrayal of Harley Quinn as they will introduce a surprising new love interest for the fan-favorite villain.

The upcoming Prime Video animated series will reimagine the Batman mythology as it will have a dark psychological and noir take on the iconic hero's adventure in a crime-filled Gotham City.

J.J. Abrams, The Batman director Matt Reeves, and Batman: The Animated Series creator Bruce Timm are involved as executive producers. It was originally supposed to air as a Max and Cartoon Network original series before it moved to Prime Video.

Harley Quinn Will Have a New Love Interest in Batman: Caped Crusader

Harley Quinn will have a very different love interest when we see her introduced in Batman: Caped Crusader.

Instead of the Joker or Poison Ivy, Renee Montoya will be the fan-favorite villain's love interest. Their pairing was never portrayed before in any past Batman media although they've been prominently featured in Batman: The Animated Series.

In an interview, Timm explained why they decided to make a massive change to Harley's romantic life in her portrayal in the upcoming series.

"The idea of putting them together was something that seemed kind of natural. We figured, as a psychiatrist, her clientele are some of the richest, most powerful men in Gotham City, and they dump all of their crap on her," he said.

"It's driving her crazy. She hears all this stuff, but because of psychiatrist-client privilege, she can't do anything about it. She can't tell anybody."

Timm continued, "We figured some of these guys have probably confessed some really horrible things to her, and she's just like, 'Well, I can't just turn this guy loose out on the streets, but I can't turn him into the cops either.'"

While the change might be too massive for fans, it is still an intriguing idea to explore for this new version of Harley as the dynamic will be different than her relationship with the Joker or Poison Ivy.

It remains to be seen whether this new romantic pairing will work or not in the context of the series, but at the very least, the creators are attempting to do a fresh take on a mythology that's been reinvented many times for decades.

Batman: Caped Crusader will premiere on Prime Video on August 1.
