Little Women’s Saoirse Ronan and Dune’s Timothee Chalamet have always been somehow put together in Greta Gerwig’s films.

They were always casted as the young lovers in the director’s previous films such as in 2017’s Lady Bird, where Ronan played the titular character and Chalamet as Kyle Scheible aka Lady Bird’s first boy crush.

As for 2019’s Little Women, Ronan played Jo March with Chalamet lined up as Theodore ‘Laurie’ Laurence.

Their heartbreaking proposal scene became one of the most viral videos on social media platforms, given they’re best friends in real life and their history in Gerwig’s films.

Now, the big question is, are Saoirse Ronan and Timothee Chalamet in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie Movie?

Unfortunately, they are not.

Ronan revealed on People as early as September 2022 that she had to drop out from her Barbie movie cameo given the conflict in schedule with her other project, The Outrun:

“I was supposed to do a [Barbie] cameo because I live in London and they were [filming] there. There was a whole character I was going to play — another Barbie. I was gutted I couldn’t do it.”

As for Chalamet, Gerwig herself revealed to CinemaBlend as to why both actors couldn’t afford to show up for their ‘special cameos’:

“Well, it was always going to have to be like a smaller thing because [Saoirse Ronan] was actually producing at the time, which I am so proud of her for. And of course, it’s brilliant. But it was going to be a specialty cameo. I was also going to do a specialty cameo with Timmy. Both of them couldn’t do it and I was so annoyed. But I love them so much. But it felt like doing something without my children. I mean, I’m not their mom, but I sort of feel like their mom.”

Who Else Appeared in the Barbie Movie? Cameos Explained!

Dua Lipa as Mermaid Barbie

While we’re well aware that Dua Lipa has long been included on the roster, her constant appearance in the film remains one of the most memorable.

Many were pretty shocked at how the budget for the Barbie movie ($145M) didn’t look as invested on Dua Lipa’s role as Mermaid Barbie costume, specifically on her styled wig.

But the point of that was to enhance that they are the Barbie doll franchise, which makes all the more sense to have them look as ‘plastic’ and as ‘unreal’ as possible.

Mermaid Barbie usually showed up by the beach and would greet Margot Robbie’s Barbie and the other Barbies and Kens, and as you can guess it, usually found in any pool or sea — yes, including ones clearly made out of plastic.

Barbie Movie director Greta Gerwig personally approached the pop singer and told her, “I’d really like you to be mermaid Barbie.”

To which, Dua agreed and told The Upcoming, “I couldn’t have been happier with my character,” even adding on to say how she would love to ‘steal all of her costumes.’

Not to mention, one of the Barbie songs, specifically, ‘Dance the Night’ was sung by Dua Lipa herself, so a special cameo from her makes all the more sense.

John Cena as Mermaid Ken

Surprisingly, John Cena made the cut in the Barbie movie, too!

Cena was quite the scene stealer, specifically in the scene where Ryan Gosling’s Ken has led all the Kens to take over Barbie Land and turn it into his ‘Ken-dom’ slash ‘Ken’s Mojo Jojo Casa Home.’

Discussing Film did post John Cena’s role as ‘Kenmaid’ (Mermaid Ken) ahead of the film’s release, but his cameo was all the more delightful to see on the big screens, especially being next to his Barbie, Dua Lipa.

Did you know? John Cena’s cast in the Barbie movie was a ‘happy accident’, as he previously told on the Today show while promoting Fast X at the time. Cena explained:

“I think Barbie and Fast X share a lot of parallels. Their cast lists are amazing. The Barbie cast is amazing. So, with a lot of opportunity, it was a chance for maybe to, ‘Hey, would you guys be willing to have me if I could do something?’ In an accidental run-in with Margot Robbie, I said, ‘I will pretty much do whatever you guys need, ‘cause I really enjoy the movie.”

Ultimately, he landed the role of Mermaid Barbie’s Ken, to which he said, “And they asked me if I wanted to be a merman. I said yeah, sure.”

Secret Invasion’s Kingsley Ben-Adir as Ken

The rising MCU star, Kingsley Ben-Adir, is one of the Barbie Movie’s Kens, specifically, the Ken who’s usually side-by-side with Ryan Gosling’s Ken as well as Simu Liu’s Ken.

Ben-Adir recently made his MCU debut as the leader of the ‘new’ Skrulls, Gravik, who plans on terrorizing the humans until they take the planet earth away from the species for themselves.

During the early days of filming, Ben-Adir told Variety on how 'hilarious' the Barbie movie looked like and how he got on board on becoming a part of the wonderful cast:

“We all looked like absolute losers in a funny way. It was hilarious. From the first page [of Barbie movie script], I was like, ‘Wow, this is really, really funny!’ I just heard such great things about Ryan [Gosling] and Margot [Robbie]. Then me and Greta [Gerwig] went out for some whiskey. We spoke for two or three hours. There was a really strong sense from early on, like, she was trying to do something a little bit different. It’s very rare that a script like that comes along. So I was like, ‘Whatever, whoever is in it, I just want to be on set with those guys and I want to be a part of it.’”

Rhea Perlam as Ruth Handler aka the Creator Behind the Barbie Doll Franchise

At one point in the film, while Margot Robbie’s Barbie was trying to escape the clutches of the Mattel Company’s CEO (Will Ferrell), she stumbled upon one of the rooms where she found an old lady having a cup of tea alone.

As it turned out, the ending of the film revealed the old woman to be none other than Ruth Handler, the creator of the Mattel Company who had been kept in the shadows. Literally.

Robbie previously revealed in an interview on USA Today about one of the best easter eggs they included in the Barbie movie that included the Barbie franchise creator herself:

“There’s this shot where Ruth hands Barbie a cup of tea, and the way we lined it up is the exact way that God is touching Adam on the Sistine Chapel. Rodrigo Prieto, the movie’s cinematographer, was like, ‘Throw it in! Barbie deserves it. Michelangelo, let’s go!’”
