It's official! The Fast & Furious franchise is getting a tenth film. The new movie, called Fast X, adds in Jason Momoa as the antagonist who'll be taking revenge on the crew for killing his father in a previous Fast & Furious film.
Here's what we know about Fast X so far.
When Is the New Fast & Furious Film, Fast X, Coming Out?
Filming for the 10th Fast & Furious film started last April 20, 2022. Vin DIesel (who plays Dom in the franchise) shared a photo of the film's logo on his Instagram account with the caption "Day One."
This is, however, the second to the last Fast & Furious movies that were confirmed. But there is plenty of room for more spinoffs and continuations exploring the back stories of the other characters in the show.
Originally, Universal Pictures announced that the release date of the new Fast & Furious film will be on April 7, 2023. But after Justin Lin stepped down as its director, many were worried if this release date could still be possible.
Thankfully, the film was able to get a new director, Louis Leterrier. The release date was also pushed back to May 19, 2023.
What Will Fast X Story Be About?
The official synopsis of Fast X reads:
"In 2011’s Fast Five, Dom and his crew took out nefarious Brazilian drug kingpin Hernan Reyes and decapitated his empire on a bridge in Rio De Janeiro. What they didn’t know was that Reyes’ son, Dante (Momoa), witnessed it all and has spent the last 12 years masterminding a plan to make Dom pay the ultimate price."
Before stepping down as the director, Lin revealed that the remaining films will be closely related to one another. In his interview with Entertainment Tonight (via RadioTimes), Lin shared:
"We’re kind of reconfiguring everything so that the next two movies should wrap up this amazing story for these characters."
Who’s Coming Back in the New Fast & Furious Movie?
The Fast & Furious franchise has brought about some of the biggest names in the action scene of Hollywood. And these actors and actresses have always stayed loyal to returning to the franchise.
In Fast X, the final list of cast members returning has not yet been made official. But based on this tweet by film's official Twitter account, The Fast Saga, we pretty much see the main cast returning to reprise their roles. These include:
- Vin Diesel (as Dominic Toretto)
- Michelle Rodriguez (as Letty Ortiz)
- Tyrese Gibson (as Roman Pearce)
- Chris "Ludacris" Bridges (as Tej Parker)
- Jordana Brewster (as Mia Toretto)
- Nathalie Emmanuel (as Ramsey)
- Charlize Theron (as Cipher)
- John Cena (as Jakob Toretto)
- Jason Statham (as Deckard Shaw)
- Cardi B (as Leysa)
- Brie Larson (as Tess)
- Jason Momoa (as Dante Reyes)
- Rita Moreno (as Abuelita Toretto)
- Daniela Melchior
In an interview with CinePop, Lin talked about Paul Walker, who was among the first characters in the franchise.
"Obviously, Paul and his character Brian are the soul and heart of how we've moved forward. Bringing him back is something I think about every day. As we near the end of the franchise, it's a conversation I'm having. I think about this possibility every day."
It's possible that they will be including Walker in the final film via CGI and body doubles. Jordana Brewster even suggested that Walker's daughter in real-life, Meadow Walker-Allan, could make a cameo as tribute to her late father.
"I feel like she feels so comfortable with us and she feels very included in our universe. And so to extend that onto being on screen would be very natural, I think. It would be very cool."
Will Tom Holland Be in Fast X?
Back in 2020, there were reports that Tom Holland will be joining a Fast & Furious movie. But considering he didn't star in the ninth film, F9, the rumor died down.
Since the rumor wasn't addressed, however, there's always that possibility that Holland could be part of the franchise. After all, Brie Larson and Jason Momoa have been included in the cast. So there's always room for one more big star.
Is There a Fast X Trailer?
Yes. Just a couple of days before Super Bowl LVII, Universal released the official trailer of Fast X. It also reveals the identity of the film's antagonist, Dante Reyes (played by Jason Momoa).
