Star Wars: The High Republic revealed its first major death with a Jedi character which sends big surprises and effects to the Star Wars stories. The High Republic is set two centuries before the events that occurred in the Star Wars' Skywalker Saga.
The era was when the Jedi Order and the Galactic Republic were flourishing. However, even though the Jedi Order defeated the Sith and established order and peace all throughout the Republic, it does not mean that the galaxy has no other threats to offer. The first Star Wars: The High Republic novel titled Light of Jedi reveals the tragedy that faced one Jedi Master. Marvel's Star Wars: The High Republic comic series also reveals it as well.

The first major Jedi character to die is Jedi Master Jora Malli. She is a Togruta female, which is the same species as Ahsoka Tano. Jora appointed the commander of the Jedi's portion of the new Starlight Beacon station in the Outer Rim Territories. It is the focal point of the High Republic's first wave of interconnected stories.
In the Light of the Jedi, the Jedi were preparing for the big opening of the Starlight Beacon. The preparations were interrupted by an event in the hyperspace called "The Great Disaster" which causes major spaceship emergency detours and crashes across the busy lane of the hyperspace travel.
The group of Jedi on and around the Starlight Beacon were Avar Kriss, Jora Malli, and her second-in-command Sskeer were doing rescue operations but found a new enemy of space pirates called the Nihil. A squad of Jedi, including Jora Malli, hoped into their Vector cruisers to engage the enemy. Unfortunately, the Nihils used a device to stop them in their tracks.
The Nihils used ‘Path Engine' a device that allows the Nihil ships to travel very short distances through hyperspace. This allows them to appear out of thin air, raiding and attacking before disappearing once again. The group of Jedi didn't saw it coming. One of the Nihils warps caused Jora Malli's Vector to get breached, causing the Jedi Master's death.
