The entire Star Wars fandom was rocked when rumors circulated a few weeks back that Marvel actor Robert Downey Jr. is being eyed by Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni to play the live-action version of the iconic villain Grand Admiral Thrawn in a future Lucasfilm project.

Now, a new report suggests that Lucasfilm has finally found the actor who will bring Thrawn to life in live-action form and it turns out, they didn't have to look that far as Star Wars Rebels' Lars Mikkelsen who also happened to voice Thrawn in the Star Wars animated universe has officially signed on to play the menacing baddie. A source close to the good folks over at Small Screen UK claims that Lars will make his debut in the standalone Ahsoka show starring Rosario Dawson.

Interestingly, the report also stresses that Favreau and Filoni were not responsible for Mikkelsen's rumored casting and the decision apparently came from Lucasfilm. Aside from Mikkelsen, Doctor Strange star Benedict Cumberbatch was also a strong favorite amongst fans although his potential involvement in the Star Wars universe still remains nothing but a geeky fantasy. Nothing has been officially confirmed as of writing so take everything with a grain of salt.

Should the rumor end up becoming true, this will once again be a monumental win for Star Wars fans who have been lobbying for Mikkelsen to land the coveted role of arguably the greatest villain in all of the galaxy not named Darth Vader. Of course, given his experience with the character, Lars is definitely the perfect choice to play Thrawn and I don't know why Jon and Dave had to think of other actors besides him to begin with.

The standalone Ahsoka series is in active development.
