Wisecrack: The Philosophy And Themes Behind Star Wars The Last Jedi

[THIS VIDEO CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR THE LAST JEDI]

With almost every news site and Youtuber covering the Easter eggs and references missed in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Wisecrack delves much deeper and discusses the overall themes and philosophy behind the movie. They've just released this quick take for TLJ, and it comes with some interesting analysis.

When it all boils down to it, the two core messages of the film are to "let the past die," and to "not be a hero;" and though it seems that those themes are definitely followed, they also came with their own contradictions in the end.

Though Luke seems to have "let the past go" by burning down the Jedi temple and exiling himself, in the end, he still ultimately embraces his past by becoming the "Legendary Luke Skywalker" to save the Resistance. When it also comes to Finn wanting to sacrifice himself, he was clearly still doing it for the good of the rebels. Then again, even if he did break the battering ram, it would only delay the First Order's taking over of the base.

Though some people might not agree with the direction the movie went, I'm happy just how much Rian Johnson was able to subvert expectations. Like Jared says, Johnson was able to anticipate fan expectations and catch everyone completely off guard. This way, anything can go with the final chapter, Episode IX.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is now out in theaters.
