Rian Johnson Talks About Mark Hamill’s Reaction To Luke’s Arc in Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Luke Skywalker has always been presented as a classical hero in the Star Wars franchise and fans were expecting the character to keep to his lawful good alignment in Lucasfilm's sequel trilogy.

However, while the character remained true to the light, Rian Johnson turned Luke into a jaded and flawed Jedi master in The Last Jedi – a bold decision which the fanbase didn't entirely appreciate. Though there were critics and fans who loved the idea of seeing Luke turning bitter over the guilt of his own mistakes, others were upset that Johnson didn't give the Jedi the "triumphant hero's return" they thought he deserved.

Mark Hamill thought so too, it seems. In an interview with the Business Insider, Johnson decided to open up about the creative differences he shared with the Star Wars legend.

"It's not what Mark had in his head initially, and that's why he's spoken very openly about his being caught off guard by the script and where the character ends up," the filmmaker explained. "But I knew this is where it had to be. We got into the conversations, and we got into the work, and we talked, and we argued, and we discussed, and that process ended up being very good for the character and also for our working relationship. It was a very good one."

Though we enjoyed seeing the humanity in Johnson's version of Luke in The Last Jedi, we definitely understand why some fans would be disappointed.
