In The Flash movie, Barry Allen/The Flash goes back in time to prevent his mother’s death, but in doing so, he creates an alternate timeline and completely breaks the universe. So, who dies in The Flash movie?

In the alternate timeline, Barry finds out that General Zod is invading Earth to make it a new Krypton, just like the events that occurred in Man of Steel (2013).

He then asks for the help of a different Batman (Michael Keaton’s Batman) and a Kryptonian (Supergirl, not Superman) to defeat Zod and go back to his world.

So, who dies in The Flash movie? Here’s a list of the deaths that occurred in The Flash movie.

Nora Allen

The Flash is about Barry Allen saving his mother from dying and causing unintended consequences in doing so. Nora Allen’s death is what kickstarts the events of the movie.

Barry’s father, Henry Allen, was accused of his wife’s murder, and this frustrates Barry. He explains to his love interest, Iris West, that it seems he lost both his parents.

He lost his mother due to a tragedy and his father due to the justice system. He also reveals to Iris that the reason why he got into criminal forensics is to fix the system.

Nora Allen’s death had something to do with a can of tomatoes. One day, Nora forgot to buy a can of tomatoes at the supermarket, which is why Henry went back to get some.

Unfortunately, while Henry was gone and Barry was upstairs, Nora was murdered by some intruders. And Henry Allen was accused of killing his wife.

Bruce Wayne gives Barry CCTV footage of his father picking up a can of tomatoes in the supermarket. But unfortunately, his father doesn’t look up, so his face isn’t revealed.

Realizing that the best evidence they have won’t work in their favor, Barry time travels. Despite warnings from Bruce about the consequences of time travel, Barry goes back in time to save his mother.

He puts a can of tomatoes in her shopping cart so that his father wouldn’t have to go back to the supermarket, thus preventing Nora’s death.

However, in doing so, Barry realizes that he completely broke the universe. He learns that his mother’s death is an “inevitable intersection” and that he shouldn’t change things.

So, Barry goes back in time again to reverse things. He removes the can of tomatoes from his mother’s shopping cart. He shares a hug with his mother before going back to the present day.

However, even though Barry does not prevent Nora Allen’s death, he did make one last change: he puts a can of tomatoes on the top shelf.

This would make his father look up in order for his face to be revealed in the CCTV footage, which would serve as an alibi in his appeal.

When Supergirl fights with General Zod, the latter reveals that he found Kal-El and intercepted his pod, but he wasn’t who they needed. Supergirl yells, “What did you do?” and General Zod responds, “The infant did not survive.”

So, unfortunately, in the alternate timeline, Superman is not alive. This explains why in the alternate timeline, the Kryptonian Barry finds in the Siberian black site is Kara Zor-El, not Kal-El.

Supergirl dies multiple times in The Flash movie. Unfortunately, her death is an “inevitable intersection” as well, just like Nora Allen’s.

General Zod manages to kill Supergirl in their fight. This frustrates young Barry, so he goes back in time to save her.

However, every time he goes back, things end up the same way: Supergirl dies. So, Kara’s death is something The Flash cannot change.

Talking about Supergirl’s death in The Flash, director Andy Muschietti said in an episode of Deadline’s Crew Call (via The Direct):

“Well, the great thing about Multiverse is that Supergirl lives in a million other timelines, right? So, nobody should– I mean, I don’t wanna spoil it, but whatever happens to Supergirl in this movie should not be taken as the absolute truth. We can see Supergirl, this Supergirl, Sasha Calle, in future projects. We might, because that’s how the Multiverse works. It’s clearly explained by Bruce Wayne. It’s like spaghetti.”

So, based on what director Muschietti said, even though Supergirl dies in The Flash movie, we can still expect to see her in future projects.

Michael Keaton’s Batman

Michael Keaton’s Batman dies in The Flash movie. After finding out that Batman exists in the alternate timeline he created, Barry goes to Wayne Manor.

However, Barry is surprised to find a different version of Batman, one that has already retired. Michael Keaton’s Batman explains that things changed and that Gotham is safe already.

Barry asks for his help to find Superman, and Keaton’s Batman decides to help. Later on, he joins forces with the two versions of The Flash and Supergirl to defeat General Zod and his troops.

In his first death, Keaton’s Batman chooses to sacrifice himself. He dies in the process while trying to blow up Zod’s largest ship.

Young Barry goes back in time to prevent Batman’s death, but the latter still dies after taking a beating from one of Zod’s soldiers.

Barry realizes that they can no longer bring Keaton’s Batman back, and the latter responds “You already did.”

Young Barry & Dark Flash

Young Barry dies in The Flash movie, along with Dark Flash. Early in the movie, we see a dark, ghoulish figure who’s later revealed to be the younger version of Barry from the future.

This dark figure appears again when young Barry tries to save Keaton’s Batman and Supergirl multiple times. Young Barry sees the scar on Dark Flash’s face and realizes that that figure is him from the future.

So, basically, young Barry and Dark Flash are the same person. Dark Flash came to be after saving their mother multiple times, and this resulted in consequences to the multiverse (this is where we see multiple cameos such as Nicolas Cage’s Superman, Christopher Reeve’s Superman, Helen Slater’s Supergirl, Teddy Sears’ Jay Garrick, and more).

For Dark Flash, Barry’s death is an “inevitable intersection” in saving their mother, so he tries to kill him. But young Barry sacrifices himself, which leads to the death of Dark Flash.

Barry then goes back in time to make things right. He gets the can of tomatoes out of his mother’s shopping cart but leaves it on the top shelf so that his father’s face would appear on the CCTV footage.

This supposedly would return things back to normal, but then a different Batman shows up…
