Despite being hailed as one of the greatest comic book movies of all time by Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav and James Gunn, The Flash ended up becoming a box office flop.
There's no doubt that it's not the kind of results that the Warner Bros. brass is hoping for considering how they hyped the film prior to its release and the fact that it has the elements that they think would convince the audience to check it out.
It also doesn't help that it has a tepid B CinemaScore and the critics' scores were not on the level that would proclaim it as one of the best films in the genre.
At this point, all the studio can do is take the loss and focus on the upcoming DC films that they have on their slate. Now, we finally have some details on how much loss they have to take for their recent flop.
The Flash Will Be a Huge Financial Loss for Warner Bros.
A recent report from box office analyst Luiz Fernando shared his analysis of The Flash's box office performance on Twitter where he explained how Warner Bros. is now suffering a huge financial loss from the film as a result of its major flop.
He even suggested that the studio might have lost less money if the film went straight to Max or shelve its release which is what happened to Batgirl last year.
As Fernando explained, considering that the film had an estimated production budget of at least $190 million plus a marketing campaign of $150 million as well as the fact that the studio only keeps half of the share from the grosses, the film will lose more than $200 million.
Right now, The Flash is projected to accumulate around $280-310 million at its worldwide box office by the end of its run.
He compares the studio's major financial loss from the new film to the debacle with the theatrical release of Justice League years ago.
This is certainly a catastrophic situation for Warner Bros. since this is now the third consecutive DCEU film to underperform at the box office and it is also a discouraging sign for their other releases this year.
There are now a lot of concerns surrounding the box office performance of Blue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which is heavily connected to the current DCEU franchise.
Fortunately for Blue Beetle, it has the advantage of being associated with the new DCU franchise which might make it more appealing to the audience as long as the studio communicates it to the public.
This is an ongoing situation so we might be hearing more details about The Flash's turbulent box office run and it is now interesting to see if we will see similar results in the two upcoming DC releases. The studio is definitely hoping that they will turn things around.
