It's happening! Netflix has given the 'Green Light' to the hit Korean TV series, Squid Game, for a Season 2 release. After its premiere in late 2021, the series quickly rose to the ranks and has been named Netflix's biggest original series. In just four weeks since its release, the series was viewed by 142 million households, overtaking another Netflix original, Bridgerton.
The show's director, Hwang Dong-hyuk, has released a letter to its fans to confirm that the TV series has been renewed. "It took 12 years to bring the first season of Squid Game to life last year. But it took 12 days for Squid Game to become the most popular Netflix series ever.
With this confirmation, fans can't help but wonder when Season 2 of this dystopian series will be released. Read more for further details about the second season.
Is Squid Game Season 2 Coming Out in July 2022?
Unfortunately, Squid Game Season 2 will not be coming to the streaming giant in July 2022. One of the show's actors, Lee Jung-jae (Seong Gi-hun), left a comment in an interview to People Magazine indicating that Season 2 could still be a long wait. "It feels like [Hwang Dong-hyuk] is really struggling to write the script. I actually wanted to ask director Hwang about it too."
Hwang has also been reported to have only about three pages of ideas for the second season so far. But the show's executive producer Kim Ji-yeon reassures fans that they are already working on the script. "There's definitely a lot of pressure on how to make [Season 2] even better."
Squid Game Season 2 Plot: What We Know So Far
In its official announcement last month, Hwang shared some potential storylines that he is considering for Squid Game Season 2:
"And now, Gi-hun returns.
The Front Man returns.
Season 2 is coming.
The man in the suit with ddakji might be back.
You'll also be introduced to Young-hee's boyfriend, Cheol-su."
This confirms fan theories that Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) will return to dig up more information about the mysterious "Front Man" (Lee Byung-hun) and his brother Hwang Jun-ho (Wi Ha-joon), who was not confirmed dead after getting shot and falling off a cliff in Season 1.
Hwang also hints that he is toying with the idea of bringing back Gong Yoo to answer questions about his role as the man in the suit. Also, a new character is said to be joining Season 2. But these aren't official yet.
More importantly, Young-hee, the killer doll, is reportedly getting a boyfriend in Season 2 named Cheol-su.
But right now, that's all we know about Season 2.
Squid Game Season 2 Cast: Who's Back & Who's Not

But there's also a chance that the old characters could return for a flashback scene. Hwang already revealed interest in bringing back some of the old characters in Season 2.
If ever, here are some of the cast members we might see in Season 2:
- Lee Jung-jae (Seong Gi-hun)
- Lee Byung-hun (the Front Man)
- Wi Ha-joon (Hwang Jun-ho)
- Park Si-wan (Kang Cheol)
- Park Hye-jin (Cho Sang-Woo's mother)
- Gong Yoo (the Salesman)
