The second season was released in the middle of a global pandemic in May 2020. And while it gave those stuck at home something to watch, it also meant that production for the third season was temporarily put on hold. This was unfortunate since the show got the greenlight for a third and final season in July 6, 2020.

Dead to Me Season 3 was supposed to start filming sometime that year since its intended release date was in 2021. But the pandemic caused some delays that prevented the cast from filming. The cast even resorted to having an online table read instead of physically facing each other.

Eventually, production started in May 2021. But another bump on the road hit production in August when one of the main stars of the show revealed she was diagnosed of a sickness.

In a tweet, Christina Applegate, who stars as Jen Harding, revealed that she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Applegate shared that she is being "supported by people that I know who also have this condition. It's been a tough road. But as we all know, the road keeps going. Unless some asshole blocks it."

The actress requested for privacy while getting treatment. Production temporarily paused to give way to her request.

While on the last week of production, the production team had several positive COVID test results. CBS TV Studios, however, has assured viewers that production was not affected in any way. The studio decided to continue filming in early 2022 so that the final three weeks of production can be completed. This also meant that some delays in the show's release date.

In January 2022, a fan asked Applegate how she was doing and when Season 3 will be released. She simply responded to the tweet: "Soon."

In late April 2022, show creator Liz Feldman revealed that Season 3 has officially wrapped filming. The show then entered post-production stage to make way for its release.

In May 2022, Netflix revealed that the show would be released in Fall 2022. But a specific release date was not mentioned. And since Fall is coming up, we're hoping that Dead to Me Season 3 gets included in Netflix's roster of shows soon.

In the last week of August 2022, Netflix announced that Dead to Me Season 3 will be released in November 2022. A specific date was not given.

We finally got a release date for Dead to Me Season 3. Netflix revealed the news at its Tudum 2022 event. Dead to Me Season 3 will be the final season and will be released on November 17, 2022.

Dead to Me Season 3 will likely pick up where it left of. Since this is the final season, the loose ends from the previous seasons will finally be wrapped up. And it could also mean that Jen will finally be revealed as the person behind the death of Steve Wood (played by James Marsden).

When we last saw Dead to Me, Jen and Judy (played by Linda Cardellini) were involved in a hit-and-run accident with a drunk Ben (played by James Marsden). The two had previously argued before the incident.

But with regards to the direction of Dead to Me Season 3, we don't have any clue yet since the showrunners are keeping this secret. Cardellini shared: "I always say whatever I can think of, Liz always comes up with something a million times better, and the writers. You think you know where they're going and they take another turn and you didn't see it coming. I'm excited to find out."

James Marsden spoke with TV Guide, "Not only is he [Ben]  maybe going to find out that Jen was responsible for his brother's death, but he's also guilty of a hit-and-run. And they were the victims of the hit-and-run. And his brother was guilty of a hit-and-run in the first season."

In an interview, Feldman said:

"From start to finish, Dead to Me is exactly the show I wanted to make. And it's been an incredible gift. Telling a story sprung from grief and loss has stretched me as an artist and healed me as a human."

In another interview with Deadline, Feldman shared how she envisioned the show to end while shooting Season 2:

"I always knew from the inception of the show that I didn't want it to be a long long-running show," she said. "Then there was a certain point when we were in production on Season 2 when the end of the show came to me, pretty profoundly, so I realized, 'I know the story that I have to tell' and Season 3 feels like the right time to do that. It's just something that came to me organically, and I tend to try to follow the gut feeling I have."

As for creating more seasons, Feldman said: "This show means so much to me and I just want to get it right, and I saw a way to do that. I think three seasons for this show is the right amount."
