What Is Cursed Energy in Jujutsu Kaisen Explained

Jujutsu Kaisen tells the story of Yuji Itadori, a high school student who joined a secret organization comprised of Jujutsu sorcerers. After one unexpected encounter, he became a vessel of a powerful curse named Ryomen Sukuna. The story is a sequel to Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School by Akutami.

In 2021, the manga sold more than 50 million copies. This achievement made Jujutsu Kaisen one of the best-selling manga of all time. The series introduced anime fans to cursed energy. This seemed to come from humans. But what are these energies really?

What Is Cursed Energy in Jujutsu Kaisen Explained

Cursed Energy comes from the negative emotions of humans. It naturally flows throughout the body and normal humans cannot control it. When this happens, they lose the cursed energy that eventually becomes curses. Curses are spiritual beings whose goal is to bring harm to humans.

On the other hand, there are humans who can control these energies in their bodies. They can do whatever they want with the energy and even control the release. Non-sorcerers cannot see cursed spirits. But those humans who have more than the average level of cursed energy can see curses and even jujutsu.

These humans have the option to become a sorcerer as seeing curses is the basic requirement of being a sorcerer.  High-level sorcerers can use the energy to perform cursed techniques.

Also, the strength of a curse or sorcerer depends on their cursed energy. This means that the more cursed energy, the stronger the curse or sorcerer is. Some sorcerers base the cursed energy level of their opponent to predict their next move.

In battles, some sorcerers read the cursed energy of their enemy to detect their location. How does this happen? When a sorcerer uses jujutsu, he or she leaves residuals of cursed energy. These are like spectral footprints that sorcerers use to determine the location of their opponent. High-level sorcerers and most cursed spirits can cover up their residuals.

There are different ways sorcerers manipulate their cursed energy. Some of these are controlling cursed energy, applying cursed energy, and Black Flash, among others.
