Call of Duty 2021 has been recently revealed as Call of Duty: Vanguard, releasing on November 5th, 2021 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S|X, and PC. The Vanguard Alpha is a free download exclusive to PlayStation owners and set to run from August 27th to August 29th. In the Alpha, players will get to try out Vanguard's evolution of Gunfight: Champion Hill.

So, what is Champion Hill, exactly? In this article, we'll explain the new mode and tell you everything you'll need to know before you load into the Alpha, or the upcoming Betas, to try it out yourself.

Champion Hill can be played in 2v2, 3v3, or 4v4, though 4v4 won't be available in the Alpha, and like the Gunfight mode in past Call of Duty games, there's a focus on tactical play, communication, and gun skill.

However, Champion Hill isn't a single match on a single small map and is instead much like the Gunfight Tournaments in Black Ops Cold War, where teams compete in a series of Gunfights to be crowned the ultimate victor amidst a number of other teams.

Though, Champion Hill isn't just a new name for the Gunfight Tournament: Unlike Gunfights of the past, rather than spawning into the game with a random loadout, players start off in Champion Hill with the same loadout. And like in games like CS:GO or Valorant, players earn money to spend on guns, equipment, and more during buy rounds in-between combat rounds.

In Champion Hill, players will be able to purchase not just guns and equipment but Killstreaks and Perks, too. This immediately changes the dynamic of the mode from Gunfight in the past which never had Killstreaks, Perks, or choices in equipment or guns.

Also like CS:GO and Valorant, in Champion Hill dead players will drop their weapons for other players to pick up, and like Warzone, players can find guns and other useful items scattered across the map as they play.

Gunfight maps in Call of Duty have always been extremely small, but maps in Champion Hill will be large, multi-team experiences, similar in size to a Ground War map from Modern Warfare. There will be four Champion Hill maps at the launch of Vanguard, which are separate from the other 16 6v6 maps that will also launch with Vanguard.

However, while Champion Hill maps are large, they're built this way so each squad's matchup against another squad can happen simultaneously on one map in discrete sections. So, it's best to think of Champion Hill maps as a series of Gunfight maps joined together.
