Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End episode 26 showcases Frieren and other mages attempting to fight their replicas in a battle of attrition. But what exactly is a battle of attrition, and what is its significance in Frieren?

What Is a Battle of Attrition in Frieren?
In a real-world scenario, a battle of attrition is a warfare strategy wherein one faction strives to exhaust its adversary by inflicting substantial casualties and destroying key military assets.
The primary aim is to weaken the opponent until they succumb. Typically, the side with superior resources in terms of soldiers and military equipment emerges victorious.
In Frieren, the Academy of Magic teaches various warfare strategies, and one of them is the battle of attrition.
The series showcases that the battle of attrition is fought mostly using defensive spells.
Episode 26 shows Frieren acknowledging that the last leg of the second stage exam will be a battle of attrition due to the sheer number of replicas against the mages.
All the Known Battles of Attrition in Frieren So Far
Most of the battles of attrition are fought in the second stage of the First-Class Mage Exam.
When the mages are ambushed by the replicas in episode 26, Denken notes that they can’t defeat them in a disorganized manner.
He advised that they split up and fight the replicas before they could gather and overpower them.
The plan is to face the weakest matchups since the replicas would face the same matchups as well.
Denken stressed that they would still be in an advantageous position because they could communicate and strategize with each other.
Lawine and Richter battle against the replicas of Kanne and Lawine and successfully defeat them.
Unfortunately, they are attacked by Sense's replica, who stabs Lawine and Richter and eliminates them from the exam.
Later, Ubel, Land, and Denken face Sense’s replica. Ubel claims that she can take down the powerful Sense’s clone.
During the battles, Denken and his team realize that Spiegel, the demon responsible for creating the replicas, must be defeated to prevent the replicas from reviving.
Finally, Frieren and Fern face Frieren’s clone. Due to their combined efforts, Frieren’s replica is defeated in the battle of attrition.
Later, the Spiegel is destroyed, and the remaining replicas are instantly obliterated.
