In Episode 7 of Marvel's What If..?, we see a cold and stern Maria Hill as the acting director of SHIELD with Brock Rumlow a.k.a. Crossbones as the guy on her side, and with Phil Coulson as one of their intelligence agents, there is a notable absence of Nick Fury especially with the decisions made in the containment of Thor's partying. What happened to him exactly?

What Happened to Nick Fury and Why is Maria Hill Acting Director in Marvel's What If..? Episode 7?
In Marvel's What If..? Episode 7, What If... Thor was an Only Child?, Thor was unstoppable in partying. Growing up without Loki, he became irresponsible and he has an excessive love for throwing parties with his friends and with creatures across the universe from different planets and galaxies.
And when he went to Earth, he landed in Sin City, Las Vegas, Nevada, which is the Entertainment Capital of the World. For Thor, he made it the Entertainment Capital of the Universe, inviting creatures from across different galaxies, different races, and kinds. It was all enjoyment and fun.
This came to the attention of SHIELD after not listening to Jane Foster who warned all of them of the incoming "invasion" that they initially thought but all this time, it was just parties from different planets. However, Fury was not so fortunate when he tried to confront Thor.
Fury went to the party but was prevented by Asgardian guards from getting to Thor. He told Thor that while the party was his, the planet isn't. Thor just gestured "cheers" to him and a rummaging Korg is about to make a "ball cannon" when Fury, who was in the way, was unintentionally hit by Korg and he flew into the crowd, rendering him unconscious for no one knows how long.

Maria Hill shared this with Jane, telling her that such was the reason why she is the acting director, and she was furious as to what happened to Fury. They had to call Captain Marvel, the best according to Fury, but the only one who was able to stop Thor from partying was his mother, Frigga, and he was damn scared of her.
