Werewolf By Night premiered just in time for the Halloween season and shortly after its release, show screenwriter Heather Quinn shares the process behind the scenes with Collider. Quinn reveals that she wrote for Werewolf By Night while filming another Marvel project, Hawkeye. Due to the time constriction, this meant she had to jump in juggling two shows at once, while also having to move forward with the new project by working with director Michael Giacchino.
Writing is a solitary experience. Inspiration comes and goes in the life of the writer, dependent on their experiences, what angle they deem to take that has yet to be taken and tackled, as well as having to concentrate on finishing the manuscript itself. Working at coffee shops seems to be the trend nowadays, but not for Quinn.
Quinn, on the other hand, revealed the writing process to be a very collaborative experience with the director. And for good reason. As showrunners, they would have to level with each other on how they envision the series to be, otherwise, it wouldn’t have been a phenomenal show.
“There was really not any period where it was just kind of me on my own. It was more kind of me going away for maybe a day or two days and coming back and going back and forth. But he was very involved with us [in] creating the story.”
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has yet to be completed, which explains the super-secretive nature of the studio. They always had to go through extensive lengths just to keep any part of the production clean from leaks, which include shooting the Avengers: Endgame and Tom Holland having to receive a different script just for the clips to work, somehow, without risking any spoilers on social media. Quinn shares how Kevin Feige trains his creatives on upcoming Marvel projects:
“One thing is, you can’t write Marvel stuff at Starbucks because [of] the fans. You really can’t write in public because of the level of secrecy around it. So I don’t go work[ing] at coffee shops when I’m writing Marvel stuff.”
Werewolf By Night is streaming on Disney+.
