Wednesday Showrunners Explain Show Similarities With Smallville

Wednesday showrunners Al Gough and Miles Millar were also writing partners on Smallville in the early 2000s, which could explain some similarities in terms of theme and characteristics between the Addams family’s Wednesday and Smallville’s Clark Kent, with both having to maneuver their special abilities in a world where they’re viewed as ‘freaks’ and ‘outcasts.’

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter on their podcast TV’s Top 5, Wednesday showrunners Al Gough and Miles Millar discuss their upcoming show debut and its similarities with Smallville. Read showrunner Miles Millar’s comment below:

“I think they’re such different tonal beasts. I mean, Wednesday, this show is so much more comedic than Smallville. But certainly it was about finding the emotion behind both these characters. I think that the thing with Clark is that he wasn’t necessarily, at first glance, emotional and that was the challenge of that character.”

In terms of being ‘unemotional’, perhaps Millar meant to point out that Clark Kent could only prioritize others first. It is not to say he did not openly deal with struggles of his own. However, he did have to mature quite quickly among the rest of his peers, seeing as he was the Man of Steel with superhuman powers. As for Wednesday, the showrunner compares her complexity and dimension with Clark Kent’s, as well.

“How do you add complexity and dimension to Clark Kent? And it’s a similar challenge here. How do you add complexity and dimension and emotion to someone who literally has no emotion? They are very, very different, but they have similar character flaws.”

Seeing as Wednesday Addams is finding herself in the same situation as Clark Kent: having to adjust to a boarding school called Nevermore Academy and get along with peers, the showrunners aim to put a line between the two characters. After all, Wednesday is bound to have a darker theme with Tim Burton directing the show.

Wednesday is set to be released on Netflix on November 23.
