There's no absence of Christmas-themed movies released last December. There was the return of Lindsay Lohan in Falling for Christmas and a new The Santa Clauses movie released during the holidays in 2022.

Another movie that gave a twist to the feel-good holiday-theme is Violent Night. Its title alone will make you doubt whether the producers made an error in releasing the film during Christmas season. But no, Violent Night is a Christmas movie that is, well, violent.

Surprisingly, the film made over $75 million from its global release. The original budget was only $25 million, which means the producers made a profit of $50 million. And because of this, it has been revealed that a sequel is in the works.

Shortly after the film was released in theaters, Violent Night producer Kelly McCormick spoke to Collider about the film's future:

"We're hoping to start working on a Violent Night 2, if everything goes well the next few weeks."

And recently, the film's director Tommy Wirkola broke the good news to The Wrap. The director was asked if there were will be a sequel to Violent Night. He answered yes.

“We’re talking about it and we’re just making deals and getting everything in order.”

Even though Wirkola confirmed that a Violent Night sequel is in the works, the director said that the deals are still being made. This also means that they filming won't start anytime soon since they still haven't worked on the script.

That said, it'll be a long wait before Violent Night 2 comes out to theaters.

Right now, the producers and scriptwriter are still in the process of working out details about the sequel. This means that a potential story for Violent Night 2 will still be worked on by the team.

In The Wrap interview, Wirkola shared that they will still need to work on the traditional Santa Claus mythology with a Violent Night twist.

“We have time to really crack the script and figure out the story. And we have some ideas, me, Pat and Josh and the producers. We’ve been talking about where we want to take it and what we want to see. There is stuff we left on the floor like the North Pole, Mrs. Claus, the elves, but story-wise I think we have a really, really cool idea that expands on the world and scope, but still keeping that tone that we love from the first one.”

Apart from the unique storyline that Violent Night offered, one thing that really attracted viewers was the cast, which consisted of:

  • David Harbour (as Santa Claus)
  • John Leguizamo (as Jimmy Martinez)
  • Beverly D'Angelo (as Gertrude Lightstone)
  • Alex Hassell (as Skyler)
  • Cam Gigandet

So far, there's no word yet on who will return to reprise their role in Violent Night 2 but we're pretty sure Harbour will be back.
