John Leguizamo Shares How Super Mario Bros. Fans Changed His Opinion On Movie

Chris Pratt’s live-action The Super Mario Bros. Movie continues to be under fire for not only the actor’s voice acting choice, but also for its lack of diversity, which was initially pointed out by John Leguizamo, who played Luigi in the 1993 live-action Super Mario Bros. movie. However, recently, Leguizamo seems to have had a change of heart all because of encountering his fans.

As reported by Slash Film, Leguizamo suddenly had a change of heart upon his initial criticism of Chris Pratt’s Super Mario Bros. 2022 movie after attending comic cons. Witnessing the dedicated fanbase, the actor admits to have grown soft for the sake of fans who grew up loving the movie. Read his full comment below:

“Yes, definitely, my opinion of it has changed. I just did Comic-Con in New York and Baltimore, two big comic cons in America, and so many people are huge fans. There were so many people dressed up as Luigi and Mario, and they [would pose as] the poster with the two plungers. They brought the plungers and there were so many [fans]. They brought their DVDs, their VHSs, their posters. I was signing so much stuff and it was like, ‘Wow, there’s so much love for this flick,’ that it softened my heart.”

There is no denying that the power of a fanbase should never be underestimated, whether it comes to campaigning for their shows to be heard or when it comes to growing impact on the actors themselves. Although this doesn’t seem to change for the actor that the Super Mario Bros. movie still had ‘backward casting’ after the 1993 film fought for Leguizamo to lead, perhaps he has come to believe that it’s the fans wanting to see the movie again that matters more.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is set to hit cinemas on April 7, 2023.
