Following its initial announcement, the new Trigun anime trailer was released at Anime Expo 2022. The trailer showed the Trigun Stampede CGI visuals on full display.

CGI shows aren’t exactly popular among anime fans, with some claiming that CGI looks cheap and stiff compared to standard 2D animation. Coupled with the fact that Trigun Stampede features Vash with a new look, it’s no surprise that the reception of the trailer was mixed.

Some of the initial fan reactions are not positive, with some even going so far as to say that Stampede will be similar to the Berserk 2016 anime – a series that has received low reviews.

On the flip side, some fans like Vash’s new look. Some are also cautiously optimistic about the show, citing that it is being made by Orange, the anime studio behind Beastars.

At Anime Expo 2022, Comicbook.com got to interview the Trigun Stampede staff, including series creator Yasuhiro Nightow. In the interview, the members of the staff shared their design process for the CG animation.

For one, the staff mentioned that work on the anime has been ongoing for around five years now. The series’ creation started with Nightow who designed the concept art and character concepts.

Though given that Stampede uses CG animation, director Kenji Muto had to interpret the designs to better fit the animation style. This is likely the reason that Stampede looks quite different from the 1998 anime.

In another interview with Anime News Network, the Trigun Stampede staff shared more insight on how long they have worked on the CGI to make it a quality show.

TOHO producer Katsuhiro Takei mentioned in the interview that the development of the whole project started five years ago, beginning with the concept art.

Studio Orange producer Kiyotaka Waki followed this up by saying that CG modeling started around three to four years ago, with actual animation starting a year and a half ago.

The fruits of the years-long work on the anime can finally be seen in the trailer which would not have been made possible without the time put into working on the CGI.

Based on these interviews, there’s no doubt that a lot of work has gone into creating the new Trigun anime, especially on the CGI side.

Aside from promising CGI and it being the return of a classic anime, Trigun Stampede also has a star-studded voice cast which might make it a must-watch for anime fans.

Trigun Stampede is expected to premiere sometime in 2023.
