12 Anime like Beastars

Beastars was originally a Japanese manga by Paru Itagaki. It can be collected in 22 tankobon volumes. It was eventually adapted into an anime by Orange, and it was already announced to have a third season soon. The series received tons of awards in 2018 like the 42nd Kodansha Manga Award, 11th Manga Taisho, and Japan Media Arts Festival’s New Face Award.

It is set up in a world where anthropomorphic animals live in a modern and civilized city. The main conflict is that there is a cultural divide between carnivorous animals and herbivorous animals. The main protagonist is Legoshi who is a gray wolf who fell in love with Haru, a dwarf rabbit. For those who cannot wait for the third season to be released, they can easily check these anime that are similar to Beastars.

  1. Polar Bear Café

As the title suggests, Polar Bear Café focuses on the Shirokuma Café which is led by a panda bear, a polar bear, and a penguin. Beastars and Polar Bear Café are the same in terms of having an animal as a protagonist.

The difference is that Polar Bear Café features the existence between animals and humans. Each episode will talk about the adventure of Panda bear and one of the characters. Aside from the adorable animals, fans will enjoy the story.

  2. Wolf Children

Wolf Children follows the story of Hana and Wolfman (who is a half-wolf and half-human). The two fell in love and had children who are half-human and half-wolf. A tragedy happened that caused Hana to raise her children on her own.

Wolf Children and Beastars are similar in terms of controlling animal instincts. Legoshi struggled to keep his animal instincts to prevent eating his other classmates while the Wolf Children did the same to live in a world comprised of humans. Both shows also have a compelling story for fans to love.

  3. Seton Academy: Join the Pack!

Seton Academy is another anime based on animals like Beastars. It focuses on Jin Mazama who wanted to unite humans with ninjas, beasts, and other creatures. Seton Academy also has a comedic side that adds entertainment to the story. Although in terms of story, both series do not have any similarities, fans will still have fun watching Jin and the other Seton Academy characters and their daily encounters.

  4. Tokyo Ghoul

Even if Tokyo Ghoul does not have a literal animal as a protagonist, it showcases how Kaneki Ken controls himself from eating human flesh, which is somehow the same as Legoshi who is doing everything he can to prevent eating his friends.

Those who enjoyed this circumstance on Beastars will also be intrigued on how Kaneki Ken will survive his situation. Fans will also find it interesting that Kaneki Ken is half-human and half-ghoul after escaping death from Rize Kamishiro.

  5. Africa Salaryman

Another animal-themed anime is Africa Salaryman. It follows three Japanese workers who decided to leave the African Savannah and enter the world of capitalist society. The three characters, a lizard, a lion, and a toucan, will have to change their habits and customs since they are no longer in the wild.

The premise itself will make fans intrigued about how the story will progress. Will they be able to adapt or will they eventually decide to go back to their old lives?

  6. Shiki

What made Beastars interesting, apart from its whole concept, is that the characters try to understand the antagonists. This gives the viewers a different side of the story from the characters. The same strategy was done with Shiki.

It centers Toshio Ozaki, a young doctor who wanted to find out what happened to a quiet village named Sotoba. He encouraged Natsuno Yuuki, an anti-social male, to discover the truth about the villagers’ deaths.

  7. A Centaur’s Life

A Centaur’s Life follows Himeno, a young centaur girl who tries her best to enjoy high school. Both series explore the high school life of the characters. Himeno is also shy like Legoshi but they do their part as students.

Himeno and her friends might encounter some problems along the way but these will help her become a better person especially with her young age. It is the perfect anime for those who like the school set up of Beastars.

  8. Devilman Crybaby

When we said that we’d compile the anime like Beastars, we didn’t only gather those who have animals as their protagonists. We also got the series that experience the same situation as Legoshi. One example is Devilman Crybaby.

Akira, the series’ protagonist, experienced a huge amount of guilt, the same as what Legoshi experienced. But even if these male leads did something heroic, they are still not accepted by society. Another similarity between the two characters is that they fell for a certain girl and the love they have for them consumed them.

  9. Somali and the Forest Spirit

Beastars emphasized that there are a lot of species that exist in our world, which can be seen in Somali and the Forest Spirit. Somali and Legoshi were also put on a spot wherein they had to overcome stereotypes and prove themselves to the creatures around them. Both shows also explored the happy and sad parts of life, making the series relatable to viewers.

  10. A Silent Voice

Speaking of characters who have guilt and plans to redeem themselves, A Silent Voice also has a character like that. Shoya Ishida once bullied his deaf classmate, Shoko Nishimiya. One day, he decided to make up for what he did to her in the past.

Legoshi had the same feelings for the actions that he did. Fans who loved Legoshi’s personality should definitely check out A Silent Voice to see if Shoya was able to redeem himself.

  11. Aggretsuko

Aggretsuko shows how animals deal with their day-to-day lives, much like what Beastars have shown. Although Aggretsuko is in a workplace setup, it still explored how these characters struggle each day to live a normal life. Fans who enjoyed anticipating the high-school drama from Beastars, anime fans can anticipate some drama and other stressful situations in Aggretsuko.

  12. Monster

Last on the list is Monster. It is about Dr. Kenzou Tenma who saved Johan Liebert. While this could be a good deed, he decided to choose Johan instead of the mayor. To make things worse, Johan committed criminal offenses after years which made Kenzou regret and feel guilty about his decision.

This made him the same as Legoshi who felt guilty that he once tried to eat Haru. Aside from their inner emotions, the people around them blame them for things they did not even do.
