To Your Eternity Episode 16 has just been released and if you've followed Fushi this far, you've probably resolved not to get attached to any side characters again - I know I did, more than once. But somehow, the anime always manages to tear that resolution to pieces and break our hearts.
It's almost impossible to watch the newest episode without warming up to Tonari and the other children of Jananda. Fushi took his time, before becoming their friends, but he's now one of them, and they all have a common goal. Things were finally looking up for everyone, until that twist, that we'll probably keep thinking about the entire week until the next episode.

To Your Eternity Episode 16 Recap
To Your Eternity is adapting an award-winning manga series written and illustrated by Yoshitoki Oima, who is also the author of A Silent Voice. In it, we follow the story of a mysterious immortal being who first comes to the earth nameless and emotionless. The being, who comes to be known as Fushi can take any form but starts with no identity and becomes increasingly human through stimulation.

Fushi has retrieved all his forms with the help of the children of Jananda, and they all celebrate, talking about their dreams. A glimpse at Tonari's diary reveals that the aspiring writer wasn't born in the island; in her early years, she lived happily in the mainland with her parents. But when she turned seven, her mother was found dead, and her father was arrested, as the murderer.
Believing him to be innocent, Tonari chose to follow him into exile rather than keep living in the mainland as an orphan. At some point, he decided to participate in the tournament in order to become the leader of the island and leave legally with her. Tonari begged him not to participate but he didn't listen.
Tonari watched the tournament, but although her father won, she no longer seemed to care, or even recognize him, presumably because his bloodlust during the battle led her to think that he might have murdered her mother after all. In the end, it's revealed that her father was alive, but he soon got murdered by other islanders, leaving her only a diary to write her dreams.
Back in the present, Fushi is now excited to complete the tournament; he's confident that he'll win and take Pioran and his new friends away. But when he enters the arena, he's shocked to find out that his opponent is Hayase, the woman who tried to sacrifice March many episodes ago. Worse still, she reveals she's the one who killed Parona to give her to Fushi as a "gift."
Evidently, Hayase wants to harm Fushi; she's the one who persuaded Tonari to trap him into the island, and, despite his immortality, she's a formidable enemy, who manages to knock him out too soon. But what exactly does she want with him? Episode 17 can't come soon enough!
