This is How The Walking Dead Season 8 Will Be Different

There's not a lot of difference when it comes to the seventh and eighth seasons of The Walking Dead. While it's true that we've seen characters killed off in all kinds of brutal ways, the looming threat of Negan and his Saviors are still very palpable.

But there is something different about the season, and for the showrunners and production, that's already spells enough difference to give the upcoming season its own characteristic.

In an interview with EW, showrunner Scott Gimple shared what this one thing is: war. That's right, war is finally the biggest battle cry of the Alexandrians, the Hilltop, and even the Kingdom, especially after that final stance in the last episode.

Because of this difference, Gimple noted that the pacing of the show will be far different this season than the previous one—a criticism that has resounded ever since we lost one of our favorite characters in the premiere episode alone.

"By virtue of the fact that the narrative has turned into one of pretty intense conflict, it's going to affect the structure in ways that make it a bit more kinetic, a bit more breakneck—shifting away from entire stories in one episode, and sort of fractured over several episodes, with little pieces of each story coming together."

This pretty much addresses the biggest concerns that viewers have had with The Walking Dead in the seventh season. For Gimple, this was necessary because the call and onset of war will have to give a different feeling to the pace of the show.

It's good to be able to say goodbye to the deep-dive episodes for characters, particularly because not all of them were even paced right for deep-dives in the first place. We need a more cohesive story, and giving glimpses of what's happening per community will give this the right amount of urgency that we need to see in the battlefield.

The Walking Dead will start production on May 1, barring any consequences of the Writers' Strike taking place.
