Learn How to Invent Game of Thrones’ Languages

If there was one memorable moment in Game of Thrones when the Dothraki language came to the spotlight, it was when Khal Drogo called Dany the moon of his life, and she likewise, calls him her "sun and stars."

I'm one of those who wanted to learn the translation of the term in Dothraki, because for a very gruff and rough group in Game of Thrones, they sure speak in some pretty romantic ways. This is largely in part to the created language that David Peterson had created for the Dothraki in the series.

Now, Peterson is offering a course on language development via a summer class at UC Berkeley. According to the Seirra Sun Times, this is Peterson's project to return to his alma mater and share his own passion for the creation of language.

"In this case, students are going to be learning how to create a naturalistic language. These are languages that attempt as nearly as possible to replicate the quirks and idiosyncrasies of natural languages, those that have evolved naturally on Earth. It's not going to focus on the creation of alien languages, or auxiliary languages, or parody languages."

Peterson describes the course he'll be teaching as an art course, where he aims to help students understand better the basics of linguistics, and give them the tools needed to apply it creatively in the same way that he has been able to.

With Dany's army having a lot of Dothraki in tow, you can check out Peterson's work when Game of Thrones returns on HBO this July.
