The Super Mario Bros. Movie became a huge box-office success when it was released earlier this year. It grossed around $1.36 billion, making it the second-highest-grossing film this year (only surpassed by Barbie) and the highest-grossing video game movie of all time.

The film also recently received nominations at the Golden Globe Awards in Best Animated Feature Film, Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, and Best Original Song for "Peaches."

Considering the major success of the film, it is inevitable at this point that it will be getting a sequel and potentially spinoff projects. The post-credits scene even teased that the next film will likely introduce the fan-favorite Yoshi.

However, it looks like a sequel is not yet guaranteed at this point according to a recent update from one of its cast members.

Speaking with Variety recently to discuss the movie's hit song "Peaches," Jack Black, who voiced Bowser, provided an update on the recent status of the sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

He shared that he is still waiting for Universal Pictures and Illumination to greenlight the sequel.

"It has been radio silence. The only chatter has been coming from me, and I don’t even know if I’m allowed to chatter. I’ve been chomping at the bit to get back to business," the actor said.

Black also discussed his ideas for the film's potential sequel where he suggested that it should be a musical similar to the upcoming Joker sequel.

He said, "I think it should be a full musical, like what Todd Phillips is supposedly doing with Joker 2."

This is a concerning update since we're getting closer to the end of the year and yet there's no affirmative sign that the film will have a sequel despite the mega box office success.

Perhaps Illumination and Nintendo are still figuring out the next step that they will do and they're not ready to make any announcement yet which is why we're not hearing any news surrounding the potential sequel. Hopefully, soon enough, we will finally hear the update that we've been waiting for.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is available to stream on Netflix.
