The Joker

Aside from the actors for the main characters of Joker: Folie à Deux, we still have no information about the rest of the cast. We will keep this page updated, so make sure to visit often.

Joaquin Phoenix returns as Joker

Joker is one of history's most iconic villains who can rival any superhero's fame. Many famed actors, including Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger, have taken on the challenge of bringing his crazy to life for the big screen. After his untimely death, Ledger even won an Oscar for the best supporting actor posthumously.

The latest actor to portray Joker is Joaquin Phoenix, who played the character in the 2019 film about Arthur Fleck's descent from failed clown to a vicious and unhinged criminal. Phoenix's performance won him his first Academy Award for Best Actor. This time, Phoenix will reprise his role as the titular role in Joker: Folie à Deux.

Will Lady Gaga Play Harley Quinn?

On August 5, 2022, Lady Gaga confirmed that she will participate in the Joker sequel. We still do not know who she will be playing, but the short video she posted on her official Twitter account suggests that she will play Harley Quinn. Lady Gaga has already proven her acting chops; she has played some complex characters in recent years. Her latest acting endeavors include playing Patrizia Reggiani in House of Gucci, and acting opposite Adam Driver, who played Maurizio Gucci.

Harley Quinn first appeared as Joker's henchwoman in Batman Adventures #12 comic book. She was initially introduced Dr. Harleen Quinzel, a psychiatrist who worked in the mental institution that housed the Joker. Over time, she fell in love with the Joker and turned into Harley Quinn, who was head over heels for the villain.

We are learning more about the cast of the second Joker movie, one cast member at a time.

Lady Gaga in A Star is Born

The plot for Joker: Folie à Deux is still a secret, but we can make guesses. The title of the film, Folie à Deux, is a French phrase that translates to "madness of two." This phrase suggests that the movie follows the same storyline as the comic books, where Arthur Fleck and Dr. Harleen Quinzel meet and fall in love. The preview Lady Gaga shared also suggests that the movie will focus on how Harley Quinn and the Joker meet.

Joker: Folie à Deux is a Musical

The first Joker movie was very dark and gritty, but the second movie may take a much pleasanter note since it will be a musical. We still do not know how the movie will incorporate songs and musical numbers. Gaga may also contribute to the music in the film, now that we know she is involved in the sequel.

Joker: Folie à Deux is not connected to Robert Pattinson's Batman

When Joker director Todd Phillips spoke to Deadline, he mentioned that the film will not be directly linked to the DCEU. He said he wanted the movie to only be about Joker and his story. Phillips even pitched starting a separate label called DC Black to Warner Bros, which offered directors the chance to pick a DC character and make a movie about them without being connected to any of the previous franchises.

I said, 'This will be the first movie, and then we'll get this director to do that, and this director to do this, and we'll call it DC Black, and Joker will be the first film. In a weird way, it gives you two bites of the apple, of these characters. You can do these kind of down-and-dirty character studies over here, and still do the DC Universe over there. To which they said, 'Okay, calm down, you're not starting a label here at Warners, but this is interesting. Go write this and tell us what you're thinking.
