Recently, we learned that Nintendo and Sony are working on a live-action film adaptation of Legend of Zelda with Maze Runner director Wes Ball attached to helm the project.
The news comes as another Nintendo film The Super Mario Bros. Movie became a huge box office success when it was released in theaters earlier this year and the video game company has since then expressed their interest to do more film adaptations based on their properties.
A lot of fans have been looking forward to hearing more details about the long-awaited film adaptation of the hit video game series and there are expectations that it will be inspired by the classic epic fantasy films.
However, as it turns out, that is not the case at all as Ball has another material in mind as his inspiration for the film.

Legend of Zelda Director Reveals Live-Action Movie Will Be Inspired by Hayao Miyazaki
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Ball opened up about his plans for the Legend of Zelda live-action movie where he revealed that it won't be similar to the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Instead, he is aiming for it to be like a live-action version of the Hayao Miyazaki movies.
"This awesome fantasy-adventure movie that isn’t like Lord of the Rings, it’s its own thing. I've always said, I would love to see a live-action Miyazaki," Ball described his vision for the film.
"That wonder and whimsy that he brings to things, I would love to see something like that."
The director added, "It’s going to be awesome. My whole life has led up to this moment. I grew up on Zelda and it is the most important property, I think, that’s untapped IP, if you will. So we very much are working hard to do something. We’re not just trying to do it because we can. We want to make something really special."
Ball also shared that they are currently working on the script and he is planning for it to be his next project after Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which is currently in post-production ahead of its theatrical release next year.
It is a promising and ambitious idea since it sounds like Ball is aiming for a unique visual style that we don't usually see in other fantasy films that have an epic scale.
Whether he can actually emulate Miyazaki's style successfully in live-action or not, it is a great source of inspiration for Zelda and it's interesting to see whether that vision will be retained when we see the final results.
