Barbie became the highest-grossing film this year partly due to the "Barbenheimer" double feature phenomenon where the audience worldwide watched it together with Christopher Nolan's three-hour biopic Oppenheimer.
With its huge box office success and positive reception from both critics and the audience, it is expected to be a major player throughout the awards season where it will be competing in several categories including the coveted Best Picture.
Now, the film has received its first wave of major recognition as the nominees for the 2024 Golden Globe Awards have been announced.

Barbie Leads the 2024 Golden Globe Awards Nominations List
Barbie led the 2024 Golden Globe Awards nominations list that was announced this morning as it received an impressive number of nine nominations including Best Picture - Musical or Comedy.
It was followed by the other half of the "Barbenheimer" phenomenon, Oppenheimer, which nabbed eight nominations including Best Picture - Drama, Director and Screenplay for Christopher Nolan, and acting nods for Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, and Robert Downey Jr.
Aside from the top category, the hit film based on the Mattel doll was also recognized in Actress (Margot Robbie), Supporting Actor (Ryan Gosling), Director (Greta Gerwig), Screenplay, Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, and three entries in Original Song.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse also had an impressive showing as it received nominations for Best Animated Feature Film, Original Score, and Cinematic and Box Office Achievement.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the only MCU film that became a box office hit this year, was able to get its only nomination in Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement.
This is definitely going to be a competitive year since there were a lot of great films that were released this year in different areas whether it's blockbusters, arthouse/independent films, or acclaimed films from the masters of cinema.
It is interesting to see how it will all unfold whether the "Barbenheimer" movies will prevail in their respective categories or other films such as Killers of the Flower Moon, Poor Things, or Past Lives will take the cake.
The 2024 Golden Globe Awards will be broadcast live on January 7, 2024, on CBS.
