It may have been months since The Mandalorian Season 2 ended but Star Wars fans are still buzzing about the epic return of Luke Skywalker in the finale episode. Sure, a lot of folks saw it coming from a galaxy away but seeing the famed Jedi master come to the aid of our heroes was still a goosebumps-inducing moment. Now, Disney is capitalizing big time on the hype surrounding Luke's triumphant comeback to the franchise.
A newly announced Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian episode will be hitting Disney+ this August centered on the creation of "Chapter 16: The Rescue", specifically the impressive process of bringing Luke Skywalker back to life through the CGI technology Lucasfilm used. Mark Hamill is expected to appear in the special.
According to a press release from the House of Mouse (via ComicBook), Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian - Making of the Season 2 Finale "is a behind-the-scenes look at the making of this celebrated 'chapter' of The Mandalorian, with a focus on the technology used for recreating Luke Skywalker.
It delves into the collaborative process, including working with Mark Hamill, to create an authentic and fitting recreation, and explores the immense pressure and responsibility the filmmakers had in bringing back one of the most important characters in film history."

It's safe to assume that we haven't seen the last of Luke Skywalker in the Mandoverse but his appearance in The Mandalorian Season 2 also had its fair share of critics who weren't that pleased with how his CGI face turned out.
If Lucasfilm has plans to continue using Luke in future Star Wars projects (which I'm pretty sure they have), the obvious route is to hire an actor who closely resembles Hamill. Of course, we know a guy who has what it takes but it's still up to Disney if they want to pull the trigger or not.
All episodes of The Mandalorian are available for streaming on Disney+.
