Jeffrey Pierce might be best known as the voice of Tommy in The Last of Us but he just debuted as a completely new character in the HBO series. But what does Pierce think of Gabriel Luna's version of Tommy in the show? Not surprisingly, the Castle Rock star has nothing but praise for Luna and even shared how his daughter reacted to seeing the Terminator: Dark Fate actor as Tommy.
Jeffrey Pierce recently spoke to Vulture where he was asked how he felt seeing another actor play Tommy in the live-action The Last of Us series. Pierce admitted that "it was incredibly gratifying" then praised Gabriel Luna's performance.
"I think that Gabriel did an amazing job of paying tribute to the character that we created for the games," he said. "When I say 'we,' I mean 50 people touched that role before I ever picked up a script and auditioned for it — and then after I left the stage, 200 or 300 people created Tommy’s performance. Gabriel came in and honored that performance, which is humbling."
Pierce then revealed that he watched the first episode with his daughter who had an awesome reaction to Luna's Tommy.
"My daughter looked up at me and said, 'Dad, he sounds just like you!'" he said with a laugh. "It’s like, yeah, he does, but then he brings all of himself and all of his life and history to it."
It's certainly a wonderful reaction to Tommy and proof that Luna's hard work has paid off, allowing Pierce to explore his own new character in the show. Luckily, we'll also get to see more Pierce as Perry in the next episode of The Last of Us.
The Last of Us Episode 5 is titled Endure and Survive. It will premiere a day early to avoid Super Bowl on Sunday. The fifth episode will air on HBO Max on Friday, February 10, 2023.
