The Last of Us Episode 9 is finally here and it just made sure the first season of the live-action series adaptation got the conclusion it deserves. Still, it wasn't an easy episode to watch. Look For The Light featured Joel having to make a drastic decision that could change his future with Ellie.

In The Last of Us Episode 9, we got to see how Ellie came into the world. Her mother Anna (played by original Ellie actor Ashley Johnson) gives birth in an abandoned house after fighting off an Infected. When she realizes that she has been bitten, Anna quickly severs the umbilical cord and waits for Marlene and the Fireflies to find her.

When Marlene finally arrives, Anna begs her to bring her baby somewhere safe and pleads with her friend to kill her. This explains why Marlene chose to leave Ellie with FEDRA before their reunion in the first episode.

In the present day, Ellie is still dealing with the aftermath of her terrifying encounter with David and his cannibalistic cult. Joel tries everything to cheer her up, from letting her feed a giraffe to listening to her puns to eventually opening up about his failed suicide attempt. As they make their way to the hospital, they are captured by Firefly soldiers and Joel is knocked unconscious.

When he awakens, Joel is confronted by Marlene who tells her that a doctor will surgically remove the cordyceps from Ellie in order to create a cure. Joel realizes that the operation will kill the girl and refuses to let them operate on Ellie. Marlene has him taken away but Joel fights back, killing everyone in his path to rescue Ellie.

By the time Ellie awakens, they are on their way back to Tommy's commune. Joel lies about what happened at the hospital, claiming that raiders killed everyone including Marlene. Ellie makes him swear that what he told her was true and he continues to lie so she verbally accepts his words.

The Last of Us Episode 9 showed that the consequences of Joel's fatherly bond with Ellie saved her life but also robbed the world of a potential cure. Needless to say, the effects of his drastic decision will be revealed in the show's second season.

All episodes of The Last of Us Season 1 are now streaming on HBO Max.
