The Batman's Paul Dano to Write Riddler: Year One Comic Book

One of the standouts of Matt Reeves' The Batman is Paul Dano's The Riddler, who is interpreted in this iteration as a serial killer. His performance was praised by the critics and audience for his unique and chilling take on the character and called him one of the best Batman film villains. As fans are wondering if they'll ever see more of the character in some sort of spinoff, it looks like we'll get his backstory in the comic book pages written by the actor himself.

DC Comics has announced that they are releasing the six-issue bimonthly DC Black Label comic series Riddler: Year One written by Dano and art by European illustrator Stevan Subic. The upcoming comic series, which will serve as a prequel to The Batman, will explore "the background of how accountant Edward Nashton went from a simple Gotham City nobody to becoming Batman’s nemesis, setting them on a collision course in the blockbuster feature film." It is set to launch in October this year.

It is exciting to hear that Dano is writing a comic book about his character since, as the actor, he probably has some interesting insights on him and will provide a very depth background on how he became the Riddler based on his experience portraying him. It's also a treat for fans who have been interested to find out the character's backstory ever since they saw the film and this could serve as their dessert while waiting for the sequel.

As The Batman continues to be a success at the box office, numerous projects set in the film's universe are currently in the works. There's also a prequel novel titled Before the Batman: An Original Movie Novel that was released a month before the film's release which showed Bruce Wayne's life years before the events of the film.

There's also the spinoff shows for HBO Max that are in development for HBO Max including The Penguin, which will feature Colin Farrell returning in the role and his rise in the Gotham criminal underworld following the events of the first film, and an untitled Arkham Asylum series, which will explore the titular asylum and the origins of the characters around it.
