The Batman Director Teases Arkham Asylum Spinoff Series in the Works

We're now at the week of The Batman's release in theaters worldwide with many critics and audiences who watched the advanced screenings buzzing about the film and some even proclaimed it as probably the best Batman movie yet. But months prior to the release, there were already plans to expand the franchise whether it's potential sequels or the two HBO Max spinoff shows centering on the Gotham Police Department and Colin Farrell's Penguin, respectively. Now, it looks like a third spinoff series might be in the works.

In an interview with Toronto Sun, director Matt Reeves shared some updates regarding the already-announced Penguin spinoff series starring Farrell. However, he also teased in the end that they are also working on another spinoff series that will center on Arkham Asylum, which hasn't been reported or announced yet before.

Reeves said, "We’re doing this Penguin series and one of the great things about that is Colin Farrell — he’s like you’ve never seen him. He’s so incredible and he’s a scene-stealer. Along the way, we thought maybe we could do (his character) as a series. So I talked to HBO Max and showed them Colin in the movie and spoke to them about what this could be and they said, ‘Let’s do it.’ So we’re doing that and we’re doing another series that connects to Arkham (Asylum). We are talking and thinking about the next movie, but to be honest with you, at the moment, I really want the audience to connect with this. And I really believe they will because I think Rob [Pattinson] is an incredible Batman."

It is very interesting that they are already working on a third spinoff series prior to this week's release which really just shows that Warner Bros. has a lot of confidence in what Reeves did with the film and they are willing to work on more spinoffs even without seeing the film's public response. However, we do have to take note that the Arkham Asylum project has not been given a series order so it's still in early development as far as we know at this point.

Doing an Arkham Asylum series is also very intriguing since there are a lot of possibilities with that concept and they can introduce a lot of Rogues' gallery characters that they may not be able to show in the films. For now, we can only speculate about what this potential series can be about, and let's also wait and see if HBO Max will give the project an official greenlight and accompany the other two spinoff projects.
