The Batman: HBO Max Gives Official Greenlight to the Penguin Spinoff Series

Prior to the release of The Batman, which is now hitting theaters, we know that they've been working on spinoff shows for HBO Max that will expand the Batman universe that Matt Reeves created. One of them will center on Colin Farrell's Penguin, who has been considered as one of the highlights of the film. Now, for those who have been looking forward to the spinoff, we have good news for you as it looks like the project is officially moving forward.

Variety has reported that HBO Max has given an official greenlight to The Penguin (working title), a limited series spinoff of The Batman centering on the titular villain. Colin Farrell is reprising the role from the film. The series will follow Oswald Cobblepot as he rises through the ranks of the Gotham criminal underworld.

Lauren LeFranc (Agents of SHIELD) will serve as the writer and showrunner of the series. She will also executive produce alongside Reeves, Farrell, Dylan Clark, Daniel Pipski, Adam Kassan, and Rafi Crohn.

"The world that Matt Reeves created for ‘The Batman’ is one that warrants a deeper gaze through the eyes of Oswald Cobblepot," Farrell said in a statement. "I couldn’t be more excited about continuing this exploration of Oz as he rises through the darkened ranks to become The Penguin. Will be good to get him back on the streets of Gotham for a little madness and a little mayhem."

It is exciting to hear that the Penguin spinoff series is now officially coming as a lot of people who have seen The Batman are looking forward to this after seeing what Farrell brought to the role of Oswald Cobblepot and there's also a lot of potential with the story that they're doing since they can lean more into the crime drama genre.

There are no details yet regarding when they are going to start shooting the series although it is likely that they will do it later this year for a potential 2023 release. While we're still waiting for the sequel, this limited series spinoff could be a good way to bridge our waiting time between the first film and the sequel. We can't wait to see what they'll do in the series and see Gotham City from the perspective of one of the villains.
