  • Quick Answer: DC Studios is developing an animated Absolute Batman series, adapting Scott Snyder’s smash-hit, blue-collar reimagining of the Dark Knight with Snyder himself serving as showrunner.

An animated series adaptation of the Absolute Batman comic book series is officially in the works at DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation.

The Scott Snyder-penned comic series has been the best-selling comic book run of this decade, as fans praised its radical reimagined take on the Caped Crusader, its writing, and world-building. In the last few years, there have been questions about whether the "Absolute" universe will be translated into other forms of media.

What to Expect in the Absolute Batman Animated Series

According to The Hollywood Reporter, during their presentation at the 2026 Annecy International Animation Film Festival, DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation announced that they are working on the Absolute Batman animated series.

Scott Snyder will also serve as showrunner for the TV series adaptation of his comic series, while artist Nick Dragotta will also be involved as one of the producers.

In case you're not familiar, in this gritty reimagining, Bruce Wayne isn't a wealthy heir from Gotham's elite; he's a hulking, blue-collar worker raised in the projects who lost only one parent instead of both. This massive, physically imposing Batman has no qualms about brutally drop-kicking gang members to protect his city.

The comic book series has gone through 11 printings and hit the No. 1 spot, pushing the series past six million copies sold. This massive success, along with the rest of the Absolute lineup, has catapulted creators like Dragotta into superstardom and allowed DC to overtake Marvel in market share for the first time this century.

Aside from Absolute Batman, DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation are also working on two more projects: Joker: Laugh Riot and a Krypto the Superdog animated series.

Joker: Laugh Riot follows the Joker on a ruthless crusade through Gotham’s underworld to hunt down the killer who stole his greatest adversary. However, as his violent quest pushes him closer to becoming a vigilante than a villain, he is forced to confront a devastating truth: without Batman, he has no idea who he is.

Meanwhile, the Krypto series will see the iconic pup tagging along with a neighborhood gang of misfit, wannabe criminals. The crew quickly discovers that Krypto is a lovable, chaotic ball of destructive energy who far outclasses them in mischief. As he enthusiastically joins their poorly planned misadventures, his inherently pure nature begins to accidentally redeem the hoodlums, whether they like it or not.

What's Next in the DCU Franchise

The new DCU movie, Supergirl, is releasing in theaters globally this week. It is the second theatrical project in the franchise, following last year's Superman.

In the upcoming film, when an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes too close to home, Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely companion on an epic, interstellar journey of vengeance and justice.

They are also working on other upcoming films, such as Clayface and Man of Tomorrow (which is currently filming). On the television side, up next on their slate is Lanterns, which will release on HBO this August.
