The Batman: Director Reveals Warner Bros. Only Had One Condition For the Film to Push Through

In an interview with Collider, Matt Reeves, the director of the upcoming film, The Batman starring Robert Pattinson, revealed that Warner Bros. only had one mandate throughout the production of the movie, “One thing they did do, which was my intention from the beginning, was they said, 'Look, it's important to us that the movie be PG-13. We want to make sure that we can get this... It's a Batman movie, and we're investing so much in it,'"

Warner Bros. reacted to the adult aspects of The Batman in the most liberal way possible, "They embraced it the whole time. There was never a moment where they said to me, are you sure? Let's not. They really leaned into everything, and I've had the support to do exact... I mean, I have to say, this movie is exactly the movie I wanted it to be, and they have supported me all the way through it. So no, there was never really that moment."

Reeves added, "And I was like, 'Well, in the Apes movies, I tried to sort of find that balance as well. I felt like in that same way, I knew that we could push the boundaries of what you could do in a PG-13 movie and still deliver everything I wanted to do.”

Reeves also clarified that, unlike other DC films under Warner Bros., The Batman has no director’s cut version or something like the SnyderCut for Justice League, "There isn't some special cut of this movie where it's like, 'Oh yeah, here's the R rating that you’ve been desperately wanting.'"

Reeves also pointed out that the film did not have to be turned upside down with cuts to make it through the PG-13 Rating, "I didn't have to suddenly start drastically cutting the movie [to achieve a PG-13 rating] or anything like that. In my mind, the movie was always going to be a gritty, edgy, noir, thrilling spectacle that was PG-13."

True to his words, Reeves made sure to he’d make it through the only request of Warner Bros. The Batman got an official rating of PG-13 by the MPA even with the “edginess” of the nature of the movie which means that while it would have some violence, disturbing scenes, or usage of strong language, it passed the rating of PG-13.

The Batman is directed by Matt Reeves and led by Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/ Batman. He would be joined by Zöe Kravitz as Selina Kyle/ Catwoman, Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot/ The Penguin, and Raul Dano as Edward Nashton/ The Riddler.

Ben Affleck was supposed to star in the upcoming The Batman film and it was originally planned to form part of the DC Extended Universe, however, when Affleck phased out of the project, Reeves stepped into the shoes of being the director and they knew, at that moment, that the film will no longer be canon to the DCEU.

The Batman is scheduled to arrive in theaters on March 4, 2022.
