The Batman: Matt Reeves Shares The Riddler's Terrifying Power

There is little doubt that The Riddler is a scary dude in The Batman. After all, he is a serial killer who targets the wealthy residents of Gotham City and leaves mind-boggling riddles along the way. Still, he's just a human being with no real superpowers, right? Director Matt Reeves has somehow confirmed that the villain has an unexpected and terrifying power that he uses on the Caped Crusader!

The trailers for The Batman has pretty much confirmed that the Riddler is out there killing people but also tormenting Battinson as he seems to be aware of the vigilante's true identity. It's a frustrating situation for Bruce Wayne since he has no idea who the Riddler is and Matt Reeves tells IndieWire that the villain uses his anonymity to his advantage.

“When I came up with the idea that the Riddler would be sending correspondence to Batman, [what] was captivating to me was if you’re a character whose mode is to work as a symbol, be anonymous, to come out of the shadows, nobody is supposed to know who you are; your power comes from the fact that you’re anonymous,” Reeves said.

He then added that the anonymity made the villain even more troubling for Bruce.

“The flip side of that is that by withholding the Riddler, he had more power, he was more unsettling. He felt like a ghost throughout the whole movie, this kind of presence that you never knew where he would show up and how he was affecting things. And that that mystery would put Batman in a very vulnerable position because he didn’t understand from where and how and what the Riddler was acting,” Reeves stated.

That's certainly an interesting way to put it since we know how much Bruce wants to keep his identity secret. Will the Riddler reveal the truth to the people of Gotham City? We'll find out next month.

The Batman stars Robert Pattinson, Zoë Kravitz, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, John Turturro, Peter Sarsgaard, Andy Serkis, and Colin Farrell. The film hits theaters on March 4, 2022.
