Lucasfilm has been working on their upcoming Star Wars movies with Taika Waititi's untitled project set to be the next one on the pipeline. However, the details regarding the plot have been under wraps except that the beloved Thor director is helming and co-writing the film. Now, the Oscar-winning filmmaker has shared some exciting information regarding his project.
As reported by Games Radar, Waititi spoke recently with Total Film about his plans on his Star Wars project to which he said that his film will explore new characters as he believes that the franchise should move forward beyond the familiar ones that we already know.
"Look, I think for the Star Wars universe to expand, it has to expand," Waititi said. "I don't think that I'm any use in the Star Wars universe making a film where everyone's like, 'Oh great, well that's the blueprints to the Millennium Falcon, ah that's Chewbacca's grandmother.' That all stands alone, that's great, though I would like to take something new and create some new characters and just expand the world, otherwise it feels like it's a very small story."
Whether you agree or not with Waititi's direction on his project, we do have to acknowledge that the franchise needs some new blood that is not necessarily connected to the previous films or TV shows since the Star Wars galaxy is bigger than we can possibly imagine and there's a lot of stories that they can tell with many planets and species that exist throughout.
While the project is still in the development phase, it is exciting to hear that Waititi is planning for his film to have new characters and, hopefully, they will make a great impression and will be as memorable as the ones that we love. As long as the story and writing are great, there should be no problem that his film will tackle new characters and do more world-building.

There is no release date set yet for Waititi's Star Wars movie, but it is planned for release in 2023.
