The Star Wars franchise has been thriving on the television side recently thanks to the success of their live-action shows. However, the theatrical film side has been questionable since there is no project that is confirmed for release soon. A while ago, Lucasfilm assured us that they are still committed to doing more feature films and now it looks like we finally have the release date window for its next big-screen entry.

Speaking with Total Film recently, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy confirmed that Taika Waititi's untitled Star Wars project is the next feature film that they intend to release. When asked if the film is aiming for a 2023 release, she responded, "Yeah. Well, not 2023, but late 2023."

Kennedy was asked with a follow-up question if it's the December 2023 date that was previously set for Rogue Squadron before it was put on hold late last year. She only answered, "We haven't locked anything in."

There you go, it looks like we will be seeing the next Star Wars movie as early as late 2023 which will be spearheaded by Waititi, who directed the first season finale of The Mandalorian and, of course, known for directing Thor: Ragnarok and the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder.

It is exciting to hear that Waititi's project is set to be released in late 2023 since it also means that production should start within the next few months just in time for a potential late 2023 release and have time to finish post-production which usually lasts for a year. If that is the case, Waititi might have already started doing pre-production for the film and perhaps head towards production after the release of Thor: Love and Thunder in early July.

We should be hearing more news about Waititi's Star Wars project in the next few weeks or months if they are indeed going to release it in late 2023 which is already closer than you might think since it's only just a year and a half away.
