Lucasfilm Boss Shares Promising Update on the Future of Star Wars Movies

The Star Wars television world has been a huge success in the past few years and presumably in the near future thanks to the reception of its live-action TV shows as well as the upcoming projects that fans have been excited to see. However, the franchise's theatrical side has been a huge question mark ever since the Skywalker Saga ended and fans have been wondering if they still have a future despite the numerous announcements regarding their film projects that haven't moved forward yet.

Speaking with Vanity Fair recently, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy was asked about their plans regarding the future of the Star Wars theatrical film slate. She assured in the interview that they still have a "road map" with Taika Waititi's movie expected to come first followed by Patty Jenkins' Rogue Squadron movie further off.

Regarding the rumored Star Wars film produced by Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige, Kennedy simply commented, "I would love to see what movie he might come up with. But right now, no, there isn’t anything specifically."

As for the Rian Johnson trilogy, whose status has been the subject of speculations, she iterated that it is still on the back-burner as he is "unbelievably busy with Knives Out and the deal that he made at Netflix for multiple movies."

Kennedy also mentioned that their work on live-action shows has influenced their upcoming film slate. While they've been working in trilogies in the past, it looks like the future films will focus rather more on individual stories. "I hesitate to use the word trilogies anymore because Star Wars is much more about persistent storytelling," she said.

It is great to hear that there is still a brighter future for the Star Wars theatrical film slate. After all, the franchise started with a film that changed the landscape of cinema forever. While we've been enjoying the live-action shows, there's still no denying that it's much better to experience the galaxy far, far away on the big screen.
