Sydney Sweeney recently revealed the real reason behind her decision to join the Sony superhero film Madame Web.

The Euphoria star played Julia Cornwall, one of the future Spider-Women that Cassandra Webb befriended throughout the course of the film.

However, since its release last month, the film has received negative reviews from critics and fans. It also became the subject of many jokes including from Sweeney herself as she recently poked fun at its box office performance.

In an interview with GQ, Sweeney opened up about her decision to join Madame Web following the film's box office and critical failure.

She revealed that she joined the superhero movie in order to build a relationship with Sony and make original projects with the studio such as the recently-released rom-com film Anyone But You.

"To me that film was a building block, it’s what allowed me to build a relationship with Sony. Without doing Madame Web I wouldn’t have a relationship with the decision-makers over there," Sweeney explained.

"Everything in my career I do not just for that story, but strategic business decisions. Because I did that, I was able to sell Anyone But You. I was able to get Barbarella."

Sweeney was also asked whether she is open to playing her character again considering that the film ended with a tease of her suiting up as Spider-Woman.

"I think that if the story is right and you have the right team, I would love to," she said.

A lot of fans have applauded Sweeney's response since they found her strategy to be a smart decision that paid off since it indeed led to Anyone But You being made and eventually becoming a surprise box office success.

Despite the film's box office failure, there are still a lot of gains for Sweeney's career since she now has a relationship with a major movie studio like Sony and has a better avenue to sell her own projects.
