The nominees for this year's Oscars have been announced, and one of the most disappointing comic book films of 2016 won a nomination. David Ayer's villain teamup film Suicide Squad earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Makeup and Hair.

2016's DC films, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad were bashed by critics last year while Marvel's Captain America: Civil War and Doctor Strange earned critical acclaim, so this is a surprising nomination. Deadpool didn't even get a nomination but Marvel wasn't left out of the 89th Academy Awards. Doctor Strange was nominated for Visual Effects.

Suicide Squad is up against Star Trek Beyond and A Man Called Ove for the Best Makeup and Hair award.
