Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has officially steamrollered the competition when it comes to this year's Razzie nominations, the site's official press release reports. The Golden Raspberry Awards, or "Razzies" are awards dedicated to recognizing the worst in cinema each year as a sort of counterpoint to the Oscars. The upcoming Razzies will be the 37th annual ceremony.
It's not exactly a twist that Batman v. Superman is dominating the competition, considering it was a heavy presence on the nomination shortlist. Still, eight nominations is a pretty impressive feat. The only film that outperformed Batman v. Superman nomination-wise was Zoolander No. 2, which got 9.
According to the press release, this year's "crop of cinematic crap" was SO terrible the contest officially expandes its nomination categories to include an "unprecedented" six entries each, instead of the usual five. Sci-fi and fantasy in general got a really good (bad) showing at the Razzies this year. In addition to Batman v. Superman, Gods of Egypt got five nominations, Suicide Squad got two, Alice: Through the Looking Glass got three and Independece Day Resurgence also got five. Divergent Series: Allegiant stars were also nominated for worst actress and Megan Fox was also nominated for her role in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows.
While most of the nominations are pretty straightfoward, the names for the "combo" nominations are pretty amusing. They include "Ben Affleck and his BFF (Baddest Foe Forever" in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and "Johnny Depp and his Vomitously Vibrant Costume" from Alice: Through The Looking Glass. The Razzies will be awarded on February 25.
2016 was definitely a year full of terrible movies. Congratulation to sci-fi and fantasy for bringing its worst. I think Gods of Egypt should have gotten more nominations than it did though. What do you think? Are these nominations deserved?
