Squid Game’s reign is not yet over yet as Netflix’s hit series garnered more nominations as the new year began.

Hwang Dong Hyuk’s brainchild got people’s attention after several Korean producers snubbed him. With Netflix’s power, the series immediately soared higher than expected and received accolades and nominations months after its premiere.

Most recently, Squid Game scored several nominations at the Golden Globes, but the nominees confirmed their absence due to various reasons.

Why Squid Game Skips Golden Globes

Squid Game received three nominations at the 2022 Golden Globes: Best Television Series, Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series (Seong Gi Hun), and Best Supporting Actor (Oh Il-Nam).

But all of them – including director Hwang Dong Hyuk – will not attend the prestigious awards show.

Lee Jung Jae’s agency, Artist Company, released a statement through The Korea Herald and said that the actor decided to skip the ceremony after careful consideration.

“Though it is a great honor to be nominated for the Golden Globes, Lee will be absent from the awards ceremony after considering the situation of the COVID-19 pandemic, self-quarantine regulations and Netflix’s decision to not submit the series in the awards,” the agency said on Thursday.

Lee Jung Jae, still, became the first Korean actor to secure a nomination in the category, going against Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong, Billy Porter, and Omar Sy.

A Netflix official, meanwhile, also confirmed that the director and Oh Il-Nam will also not attend this year’s Golden Globes.

What Happened to Golden Globes?

Director Hwang Dong Hyuk and the Korean stars’ absence came after the annual event suffered from criticisms due to allegations of racism and sexism.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Associations faced boycotts from films and Hollywood stars, prompting them to change their rules, bylaws, and more to become “better.” Despite that, the Golden Globe Awards’ longtime broadcaster NBC decided not to air the ceremony this year.

Golden Globes will happen on January 10.
