Spy x Family Code: White Is a Certified Box Office Hit in Japan

The Spy x Family movie recently premiered in Japan, and as expected, the movie is already a big hit. Earlier this week, it was confirmed that Spy x Family Code: White became the top movie in Japan’s box office during its opening weekend.

Even though the new anime season hasn’t gotten as much attention as the first based on online discussions, there’s no doubt that the series’ popularity is still at an all-time high based on its box office tally.

Code: White Tops Japan’s Box Office Chart During the Weekend

Spy x Family Code: White is a highly anticipated anime film, both for anime-only watchers and manga readers. That’s because, unlike the anime series, this film features an all-new original story by series creator Tatsuya Endo.

The film has been promoted for months now, including via creative collaborations with the likes of Mission: Impossible and Street Fighter 6.

Its marketing, coupled with the general excitement for it, meant that the film easily took the top spot at Japan’s box office during its first three days in cinemas.

Code: White opened in Japanese theaters on Friday, December 22. After three days in cinemas, the film took home JPY 1.224 billion (around USD 8.6 million).

This makes the film have among the biggest opening weekends in 2023 for anime films. In fact, its opening weekend numbers are comparable to Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron, which got JPY 1.626 billion.

Spy x Family Code: White Is Also Coming to International Theaters

Unlike Hollywood films, anime movies don’t typically reveal their budgets. Thus, we can’t exactly say how profitable anime movies are.

Given that even big Japanese blockbusters like Godzilla Minus One only have modest budgets, it should be safe to say that Code: White is already a huge hit for its studios and production companies.

It should rake in even more globally as it was confirmed a few weeks ago that Spy x Family Code: White will be released in North American cinemas in 2024.

For now, there’s no word yet on when the film will be released in US theaters. Based on other anime film releases, we should expect word on a release date in the coming weeks or months.

As for where it will be screened, there’s a good chance that the movie will get a wide release in the US instead of more limited releases like other anime movies.
