Spider-Verse 2 Director Suggests Ending Is Similar To The 'Darkest' Star Wars Trilogy Film

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse may be weeks away, but co-director Kemp Powers just revealed a major spoiler for the ending of the animated sequel.

“Across the Spider-Verse is a movie on its own, but it definitely ends on a bit of a cliffhanger. I think it’s a good cliffhanger.” Powers revealed in a recent interview with SFX Magazine (via GamesRadar).

Powers added: “We hope that it’s a satisfying tee-up for what’s coming in [Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Part 2], because you want people to be excited about what’s coming next.”

The director sheds light on the advantage of having a third film greenlit ahead of the sequel’s release. In this case, the Spider-Verse “has an arc of its own that we needed to complete.”

“It helps that we knew going in that this was part two of a three-part story. Since you already know that the third story is guaranteed, you can tackle it a bit differently.”

The co-director continued on to describe spoilers on what to expect in the ending of Spider-Verse 2, which he compared to Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back.

“I was very satisfied after The Empire Strikes Back. And hopefully, this is our Empire.”

In fact, this is not the first time Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has been likened to that of the classic Star Wars Trilogy film.

Previously, Spider-Verse 2 writer-producer Christopher Miller said the same thing, in which the first people who have seen the film compared its ending to The Empire Strikes Back:

“People who’ve seen [Across the Spider-Verse]... have told us that it feels like The Empire Strikes Back of the Spider-Verse franchise.”

He added: “It shows you worlds you haven’t seen, and it’s an emotional story that ends in a place where you need to see the third one. So, yeah: This is our ‘Empire.’”

It’s no secret that a cliffhanger is to be expected from Spider-Verse 2, especially since a third upcoming film was already slotted after the sequel’s release.

However, considering the dark elements The Empire introduced to the Star Wars universe, there’s a chance that Spider-Verse 2 could also be emulating a darker narrative to tell with Miles Morales and Spider-Gwen’s return to the multiverse.
