Swing into the multiverse with Miles and Gwen as we gear up for two new movies joining the Spider-Verse franchise.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was an animated film produced by Sony Pictures Entertainment and released on December 14, 2018. This Spider-Man tells the story of Miles Morales, a teenage New Yorker who got bitten by a radioactive spider while out tagging a hidden subway system with his uncle. Soon, Miles finds himself developing powers similar to that of Spider-Man.

Into the Spider-Verse explores the possibility of different Spider-Man's existing in other dimensions. These different versions of Spider-Man were pulled into Mile's world through Kingpin's supercollider. They all work together to defeat Kingpin and return to their respective worlds while saving Mile's world in the process.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was a runaway hit, which encouraged the producers to renew the franchise for back-to-back sequels, originally called Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part Two).

Keep your webs up-to-date and ready to traverse the multiverse with everything you need to know about Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) was initially set to be released on October 7, 2022, but Sony recently announced that the first sequel would be released on June 2, 2023, instead.

Sony also changed the title for the first sequel from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, scrapping the "(Part One)" part.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Sequel

Sony also released news about the third movie in this Spider-Man trilogy. Tentatively titled Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part Two), the new title of the movie is Beyond the Spider-Verse. Its new projected release date was also announced on March 29, 2024.

Gwen looking in from different dimensions

The original leading cast from the hit animated movie Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse will return to reprise their roles in the second movie of this Spider-Man Trilogy by Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Shemeik Moore will return as Miles Morales, along with Hailee Steinfeld lending her voice to the animated Gwen Stacey. Jake Johnson will also return as Peter B. Parker, who was Miles' mentor in the first movie. Other actors playing roles in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse are Issa Rae, who will play Jessica Drew, aka Spider-Woman, and Oscar Isaac (from Moon Knight) as the Spider-Man from 2099.

The other Spider-Mans from the first movie could also appear, like John Mulaney's Spider-Ham, Kimiko Glenn's Peni Parker, and the Spider-Man Noir voiced by Nicholas Cage. There have also been reports of the possibility of a Spider-Man India and a Japanese Spider-Man joining the franchise.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Villain

In June 2022, the directors of the film introduced the villain of the movie - a mysterious being simply known as The Spot.

In the comic books, The Spot was first known as Johnathon Ohnn, a scientist working for the Kingpin trying to figure out the powers of the vigilante Dagger, who evaded his scanning attempts. Ohnn, however, succeeded in reading the power of Cloak, one of Dagger's allies. Cloak's body works as a portal to the Darkforce Dimension. As he tries to reproduce Cloak's abilities, he accidentally creates a portal to another dimension which he names the 'Spotted Dimension.'

Jason Schwartzman will be lending his voice to The Spot.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Cast: Who is Working Behind the Camera for the Animated Movie?

Meanwhile, the live-action stars from previous Spider-Man movies are also open to appearing in the Spider-Verse for a Sony-MCU cross-over. Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield could make guest appearances in the animated film after playing supporting roles in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Tom Holland, Jacob Batalon, and Zendaya are also open to being a part of the Spider-Verse. Writers Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and David Callaham have hinted at the possibilities that could come with extended multiverses in various interviews.

The film is co-directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson.

Gwen and Miles

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will be another dimension-hopping, web-slinging movie across the multiverse.

Across the Spider-Verse seems to occur after Into the Spider-Verse because the first look shows us an older Miles and Gwen. The first look also tells us that Miles will be traveling between different dimensions, taking the trip that the other Spider-Man took in the first movie. There have already been reports of a pencil-drafted world and the existence of Earth-928, giving us enough evidence that Miles will travel to at least two other dimensions for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

Another big theme in the movie's first look is the prevalence of the Hexagon. The Hexagon was used as a portal in-between alternate reality in other MCU movies. This was the case with Captain Marvel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2, and the television show WandaVision, so could this be another hint for a possible cross-over?

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Sneak Peek

*potential spoilers up ahead*

During CinemaCon 2022, held from April 25 to April 28, Sony released the footage for the first 15 minutes of the movie. We will do our best to keep this bonus sneak peek spoiler-free, but proceed at your own risk!

The scene starts with Gwen Stacy sneaking home while her dad, police officer George Stacy, is busy in the kitchen. Neither one have much to say to the other, and we can assume that things are not well between them.

A crime breaks out at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City, and both George and Gwen hurry to the scene separately. George is irritated by the arrival of Spider-Woman, who he doesn't know is his daughter. George wants to arrest Spider-Woman because the police blame her for the death of Peter Parker in this universe.

Meanwhile, the Vulture attacks and proceeds to ruin the Guggenheim Museum. This Vulture is a native Italian called Adrian Toomes, and it seems he came from another dimension. Gwen and the Vulture battle it out, and just when it seems like the Vulture is about to win, an interdimensional portal opens and we see Spider-Man 2009, aka Miguel O'Hara, and another Spider-Woman, aka Jessica Drew, who was riding a motorcycle and sporting a baby bump. The other two Spider-people (Spiders?) arrive to help defeat the Vulture.

After the battle, Miguel explains to Gwen how the events in Into the Spider-Verse opened a rift in the multiverse that villains like the Vulture used to jump through different dimensions.

Let's skip some spoilers and focus on Miles, who is shown rushing to a parent-teacher conference at school. During the conference, Miles tells his parents he wants to study quantum physics at Columbia University in New York City. His parents tellsMiles that they would rather he study nearer to home in Brooklyn. Then, Miles' spidey senses start tingling, and he excuses himself. The footage ends here, but this may be when he meets up with Gwen and the other Spideys.

Across the Spider-Verse Variant

A year before the second Spider-Verse movie premieres, we see Spider-Verse toys lining up the shelves in stores. Some of the toys feature Spider-Punk, a variant that originally appeared in the comic books. Spider-Punk came from Earth-138, and he used both his guitar and his web to fight evil.

This toy release may hint that Spider-Punk could be one of the variants appearing in the movie.
