The year 2023 has been a rocky one for comic book movies. While Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse received critical acclaim and became a huge box-office success, most of the MCU and DCEU releases received disappointing performances.
It is unclear yet what the future of comic book movies will be in the aftermath, but we can safely say that most of them won't be recognized in the awards season, unlike the past few years when films like Black Panther and Joker got recognized in major categories.
However, there is still a chance that they will get recognized in the craft categories and now we finally have an official word on the films that are officially in contention for Best Visual Effects at the Oscars.

Oscars Best Visual Effects Finalists Include MCU Movies, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and More
As reported by Variety, the 20 finalists in the Best Visual Effects category at the upcoming Oscars ceremony have been announced which include all MCU films this year and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
Despite the franchise's rocky year, all three MCU films (Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and The Marvels) were able to make it on the list and potentially receive nominations in the category.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse's inclusion in the list is very impressive since animated films rarely get nominated in the category and, given its acclaim, it is very likely that it will end up getting included in the final five in the end.
On the DCEU side, only Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which has not been released publicly in theaters, was able to make it on the list which is an indication of the quality of its VFX.
Other notable films that made it on the list are Barbie, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Godzilla: Minus One, Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, Wonka, The Creator, and many more.
Oppenheimer was notably snubbed on the list, which was a huge surprise for many awards pundits since it was predicted as the frontrunner due to its impressive practical effects work on the Trinity Test scene.
It is curious to see which of the 20 films will be able to make it on the final list and whether the aforementioned comic book movies will have representation. Whatever you think of them, there's no doubt that some of them have impressive visual effects that deserve to be recognized.
